Yet again the sanctimonious scissors of the censor swoop in to screw a film to an ignoble death. The tagline on the dvd box reads "the most violent film ever made!"; thanks to censorship that is at best a laughable statement. All the most violent scenes are snipped out of this edition, leaving it tamed and insipid.

That isn't to say it's a write off; by the standards of the genre it still has its merits - the acting, shooting and dialogue are all decent, It has a catchy musical score and it has its ham fisted social commentary aspect all present and correct. Its a huge shame - if it wasn't so mangled in the editing room I would probably have loved this film. If you can, pick up an unedited version - I understand some of the American releases are less butchered.

I cannot understand why this was a video nasty and was banned in 31 countries
I am pleased that I paid under £2 for it (including postage)
you have to use your imagination because there is no real gore
the acting was hammy and the music was probably taken from a 70s porn video

Fantastic horror film so much gory detail which I have never seen before. Easily one of the most cannibalistic films I've seen to date and the story was good as well great watch.

Some scenes may not be to all tastes, not bad for the price.

Two siblings Rudy & Gloria and there friend Pat travel to a south American rainforest so Gloria can prove cannibalism is a myth. The group then runs into Mike & Joe who claim they were attacked by cannibal, it's then discovered Mike (who is also a drug dealer in NYC) was the aggressor and has killed members of the tribe. The younger members of the tribe snap and start hunting down all the members of the group for there revenge.

Umberto Lenzi's brutal and shockingly violent 3rd foray into the cannibal genre is a film not so easy to forget. The film contains some deeply shocking scenes particularly to the character of Mike (you might think rightly so) he gets his bit cut of and eaten and his final scene is a memorable one. Zora Kerova's famous death scene is a memorable one also when she gets hung up by the breasts. The scenes of animal deaths are very unpleasant and unnecessary because they aren't part of the story they've been added it would seem for the exploitation value. Performance wise you get what you'd expect for a film like this adequate and nothing exceptional. Lenzi however does keep up the pace and keeps a very tense atmosphere and it makes the film queasily watchable. The soundtrack is great especially the title track which adds the atmosphere.

Famously banned in 31 countries it was also banned in the UK where it made the video nasties list, this isn't really a shocking surprise as it is a very violent film but not an unwatchable one. Best to avoid the official UK DVD release as it's just to heavily cut and get an uncut release from abroad if you want to watch it.
