Rowena is suddenly a strong and kick-ass heroine with a terrific falcon on her shoulder. She wins every battle, but something is standing in her way. She has to fight to become free again. Candra's Freedom is very different from the first novella in The Golden Key Chronicles. It was a nice surprise. AJ Nuest can tell a story and this one is absolutely wonderful again. I loved the fighting scenes. They show how much Rowena has grown as a person. Even though she doesn't have any memories from before she stepped through the mirror, she still has the same determined character, which is what's making her so likable. I'm glad I've discovered AJ Nuest's books. When I read them it feels like it's my birthday. I'm opening a present every time I start one.
Rowena has changed greatly from her relaxed character we met in the first book, she is strong and feisty and answers to no one. Prince Caedmon has been help captive for two years and is finally free to return, but if he thinks Rowena will fall straight back into his arms, he has another think coming!
I loved this more than Rowena's Key! I much preferred the world of Prince Caedmon and there was a more adventurous take in this book and I loved Rowena's new character. Although romance took a back seat in this, Caedmon's feelings for Rowena have not faltered in the slightest and I wanted Rowena to see sense and not be on the defensive with him. But her circumstances are completely understandable.
I was completely enchanted with the second part of The Golden Key Chronicles. So pleased the wait for the third in the series is not far off!

Candra's Freedom starts two years from where we left Rowena's key, with Rowena having just landed in this new world, and being separated from her Prince Caedmon. While we don't know what has happened in between it's clear that Rowena is a very different woman to the one we saw before. She still has her stubborn edge, but now she is very tough and clearly has had a hard time.
Soon a boat is arriving, returning Caedmon from his time away. Knowing the situation even less than us, he scares her with his reactions and determinations to pick up where he left off. We see a lot of the circumstances through his eyes as he has to figure the past, and learn some hard truths. This showed a very different, side to him, emotions heightened until they made a wall of steel as he had to be restrained to stop him committing murder, as well as castle life, to what had been alluded to in Rowena's Key. Backstabbing and political wordplay take precedence at every turn. He can't rescue the heart of his girl without committing treason.
On Rowena's part she has become very physical, a trait that fits her bringing some of the modern day sexual equality with her to the past. She's inventive and the fights are written believably. I did feel they were lacking somewhat in emotion, however I think this is partly in design as Rowena has had to suffer to survive. When she is alone with her hawk I think is the only time we truly see her let down her guard and see what is really going on inside.Read more ›
This is the second in a series of 4 novellas continuing the tale of Rowena and Caedmon, two years after Rowena’s Key ended.
The story details Rowena’s hardships, how she has gained the respect of the guards through her fairness and her fighting skills. Whilst she cannot recall how she arrived at the castle, she is determined not to be curtailed by it.
Caedmon, on being released, finds out how badly she has been treated and is determined to protect her. Rowena, still believing Caedmon is her enemy, wants nothing to do with him and fights her growing attraction to the prince.
She has become a warrior in their time apart and will fight for her freedom, he will do whatever it takes to keep her near him and safe.
I enjoyed this second instalment greatly. Rowena’s character has developed in such a positive way. She shows how she has become a determined fighter, not just a woman who is bound by the term sorceress. She has faced fear and violence and is determined to be a free woman, rather than give into the pressures of court. She is also determined not to rely on a man and fights the attraction to Caedmon which confuses her.
This is less of a love story and more of a tale of empowerment and determination, the search for freedom and ultimately being able to trust once more.
I couldn’t wait for part 3, Caedmon’s Curse, so I read this straight after. That review to soon follow this…
