Review

A brilliant book, for anybody who is living with cancer, and it affects us all...this is invaluable. (ITV Lorraine)

There are only a handful of books that I recommend. Sophie Sabbage's book, The Cancer Whisperer, just rose to the top of my list. It will guide you through self-discovery and empower you to create a healing milieu in your body, mind and spirit. (Daniel Kennedy Contreras, MC, Pyscho-Oncology Counsellor and Executive Director, Oasis of Hope Hospital)

Sophie Sabbage is a force. The effortless beauty of her writing insinuates her powerful messages deep within the reader, and I found myself brought to tears with regularity. There is enough poetry, passion and purpose compressed into this small volume to propel you to reconsider every aspect of your life in the most fundamental way. Whilst aimed fairly and squarely at those with cancer, The Cancer Whisperer is also a 'must read' for family and friends who seek to understand the 'inside experience' of cancer and the ways which they can be a genuine support and help. (Robin Daly, Founder of the Yes To Life UK cancer charity)

A beautiful love letter to cancer. . .one of the most moving and powerful books I have ever read...Genuinely amazing. (Tim Dingle BSc (Hons) MIBiol PGCE MBA Mediator, author, comedian and founder of Be Amazing Every Day)

If you are one of us who have or has had cancer please read Sophie's book. Hear the whisper that carries her wisdom that will enable you to let cancer heal your life. (Linda Brown, Chiropractor and breast cancer patient)

Written with great intensity and economy, it is like a great book of poetry - an intimate companion in a time of fear, when clear-eyed, well-informed, uncompromising friendship is most appreciated. (Professor William Torbert, creator and author of Action Inquiry: The Secret of Timely and Transforming Leadership.)

I'm bowled over by Sophie's book. This is wisdom from a huge, generous heart and formidable intelligence. Profound, passionate, lucid, Sophie presents a new way of responding to cancer by attuning, going deeper, getting on purpose, making clear decisions about action and treatment...The Cancer Whisperer is a brilliant and inspiring guide, in fact, for all of us when we feel defeated by body, mind, illness or challenging life events. (Rosie Jackson, Author, B.A. D.Phil., creative writing teacher)

Sophie, thank you for your implausible gorgeousness and generosity. I am sitting here blurry eyed with a snotty nose and red eyes after reading your. . . what? Story, book, life? I feel alive now...My soul gives great thanks to you for breaking my heart tonight. (Jason Harrison, Life Coach and Transformational Facilitator)

Sophie's book is inspiring, informative and motivating. It is a tribute to all those who have not given up, all those who have followed their own heart and taken their healing into their own hands, with or without conventional medicine. (Dr. Dana Flavin, Physician, Scientist, Pharmacologist and Founder of Collmed, the Foundation for Collaborative Medicine and Research)

If you want a reason to get up in the morning and smile at the world, then read The Cancer Whisperer to find out how she got there. It will make you cry, too. (Maggie Pagano, journalist who writes for the Independent and the International Business Times.)

What a magnificent book!...One of the gifts of this book is how it honors the trio of orthodox medical advice, alternate modalities and one's own sense of internal rightness. It is a moving story and a rich offering of coaching and sharing, resources and encouragement. (Bruce Nayowith, M.D.)

This is medicine for the soul from a soulful cancer thriver. (Kelly Turner, PhD, New York Times Bestselling Author of Radical Remission: Surviving Cancer Against All Odds)

Sophie is an extraordinary human being. Prepare to cry, then feel you can do anything. (Red Magazine)

I read this book because someone I care about has stage 4 cancer, I wanted to see if there was a way to help rather than just tea and sympathy. I found this book useful on a number of levels. The author talks about what she needed from friends, her feelings and some really helpful practical information. This isn't a text book it's a journey, which I think would be useful to anyone suffering from illness not just cancer, and their friends and family. What I particularly love about this book is that the author is not a victim she's in control of her journey and embracing what it has to offer, I hope if I am ever in this situation I would be do positive, proactive and integrative.

I was recommended this book by a good friend. I was hesitant at first to read either Sophie's blog or book because my mind told me "what did this have to do with me? I haven't got cancer. Actually I was scared to get that close.

But something deeper told me I needed to read it. A lifetime of depression, sadness, a deep sense of failure and rage that pervade my days ... I thought at the very least I could feel "well at least I'm not here" when I read it.

That didn't happen.

Instead, I have found myself in a world of deep and nourishing support. I have registered that while I may not have cancer, just like the ex alcoholic, I still have all the negative, misery making behaviour patterns that Sophie delves into with the courage of a Masai warrior. Her bravery and naked raw directness is exactly what I need to read. She's shining a beacon in the darkness every person I have ever met also knows ... And is saying "it's not safe here, it's not easy here, but you're not alone here".

I feel as though something magical has happened by bringing Sophie's extraordinary gift into my life, and I wish her and her family all the love in the world through each extra day they have together.

Thank you Sophie for this needed book, it's truly life changing.

I am completely knocked out by Sophie Sabbage's book. I cried and laughed and marvelled my way through it. As a vicar, I have spent untold hours with people with cancer. And have buried some very dear friends. But I have never come across anything like this from a woman who is not only doing everything she can to become fully alive with cancer, but offering a magnificent panarama of practical help and spiritual guidance to others. Many people basically sleep-walk through illness, gradually passing into a shadowland of fear and despair; I have seen it many times, and understand how it happens. But not so, Sophie! In a deeply honest human way she reveals the inner landscape of a person utterly dedicated to live every moment of life - even the most challenging moments. Yet she doesn't come across as some heroic figure, but an ordinary, vulnerable person, feeling everything any of us would feel in the circumstances, but refusing to be a victim. Like everyone else, I hope I never never need to navigate my way through cancer, but if I do, I know I will now have a compass in this book. And meanwhile I will recommend it to everyone I meet who does need it. That said, this isn't simply a book about living with cancer; this is a gift from a massive loving heart to anyone who needs the empowerment to choose their own way in life regardless of circumstances - and that is all of us!

Reading The Cancer Whisperer has been a gift. More than anything, this book enables one to think, in depth, about having Cancer, without being paralyzed by fear. It gives detailed information without preaching. It empowers and invites anyone to find a path to dealing with a Cancer diagnosis with dignity. It is a gripping read for anyone whose life has been bombarded by Cancer. The courage of Sophie, her husband John and daughter G are truly inspirational.
It should be compulsory reading for all medical staff training in Oncology.

This is an incredibly powerful book filled with much hard to find wisdom as much applicable to those in relationship with cancer or other diseases as those of us who are confronted by medical conventional wisdom that pays little attention to the inner game of health and wellness. I do not have cancer and do not have a personal relationship with life threatening illness but I was provided an advance copy of the book because Sophie and I have a common mentor. I had never met her prior to reading the book.

The book drew me in immediately with such a vulnerable and gripping introduction, where Sophie brings a very personal view into her journey since her initial diagnosis. It is rare to find such an unvarnished window into the emotions and thoughts of someone confronted with their mortality who has chosen not to be a victim. I felt inspired by Sophie's presence and courage as she defined her attitude and choices, which is rare in my experience to see role modeled so clearly in the face of mainstream taken-for-granted beliefs.

As someone who is highly studied in developmental psychology, I was impressed with how pragmatic and down to earth is Sophie's writing. This is not a book laden with abstract theory. Rather Sophie reframes mainstream views steadily through clear thinking, story telling, and inspiration. The life lessons she imparts are important for all of us as we face overwhelming complexity and change. Her advice in Chapter 1 about the importance of continually "releasing the stress that fear generates" and how to do this is relevant to us all.

I was surprised to read in Chapter 5: Stabilize Your Body her recommendations about changing your diet and detoxing your environment.
