Gah! I wanted to like this book, I really did. But I don't like it, not at all. The book is made up of letters addressed to people and things, usually ones she hates. How exhausting.
My three biggest issues with the book are:
1. In the letter addressed to Topshop, she boasts about a 'sticking it to the man' type moment when she shouts at a security guard (who, let's face it, is probably underpaid and tired) about how awful Topshop is for not stocking large enough sizes. Wow. Way to go. You really told them. Letting loose at a man who has no loyalty to the clothing company and is most likely employed from a company outside of Topshop.
2. In the letter addressed to feminism, she claims that it has become a dirty word (which is a very tedious fallback position) and instead argues we should call ourselves "equalists". I was so enraged by this I had to have a break from this book for a few days. It just reeks of ignorance. She also has no concept of intersectionality and does not understand how feminism has been dominated by white voices.
3. She argues that certain women aren't suitable role models. Despite calling some Page 3 models 'inspirational', Clarkson goes on to argue that some women are bad role models. She specifically calls out Miley Cyrus in another tedious, overdone point about Twerking (no, this book was not written in 2013, it was actually released last year- 2017).
So in a book all about how hard women have it, she picks on other forms of women (I haven't even got to her rants about women who wear yoga pants, pop stars) and everything else is just complaining.
Overall, I never want to think about this book again.

‘JUST IMAGINE IF WE, THE NORMAL GIRLS, STOOD UNITED AS AN ENORMOUS, HYSTERICAL AND PROUD ARMY. WE WOULD BE UNSTOPPABLE.’
‘A fresh, modern take on feminism and life from one of the most compelling voices of her generation’ JANE MOORE
‘A stirring call to action’ KATIE SPICER
Written with gumption, fearlessness and sharp wit, Can I Speak to Someone in Charge? is a window into the ridiculous ideologies and the absurd expectations that shape the lives of modern women.
In a series of open letters, Emily Clarkson addresses all manner of subjects, from body hair to Facebook friends to the perils of wearing Lycra. She unpicks the validity of notions such as ‘the thigh gap’; questions the quotidian scrutiny by the media; ponders the etymology of the term ‘plus size’ and considers our unshakeable obsession with dieting, while wondering why some of us are still crying in changing rooms.
Full of vital life lessons, outrageous confessions and poignant reflections, Can I Speak to Someone in Charge? is a love letter to women everywhere; reminding us that being strong, being kind and being yourself is really what ‘normal’ should be.
‘Being asked to write a book was probably the best thing that’s happened to me – up until that point I was gravely concerned that my mum was the only person reading my blog. I hope this book will speak to a range of women, and men actually, I hope it will make people laugh, but more importantly I hope it will open people's eyes to the fact that we've got a lot to do if we want to make growing up in a good and kind world a possibility for our daughters.’ Emily Clarkson

To be fair I'm probably not the target audience ( I'm 38). This book is a series of 'letters' written by the author, some of which are addressed to herself and some which comment on subjects such as the sizing of clothes, eating disorders, friends, page 3 , feminism, food etc. There are very few pages that don't contain swear words used just for the sake of it and I found the style quite repetitive. I think the author probably benefited by getting her frustrations out more than I enjoyed reading the book. I did agree with some of Emily's opinions / observations but didn't find the book particularly funny or informative, it's just a series of someones opinions written down.

This book is an easy read with humour. Which is understandable, Emily is Jeremy Clarkson's daughter. She writes well. A very enjoyable book giving candid answers to many teenagers. Recommended.

So, this is the first new book I’ve read all the way through in years, and I gotta say, I loved it! Emily Clarkson has absolutely nailed the topics she covers, all while being entertaining and hilarious. From the letter “Dear Emily Aged Thirteen” no joke, I was CRYING. Because it told me things that I needed to hear when I was that age, even at the age I am now where I still struggle with some of these issues. So, Emily, if you’re reading this, thank you so much. For being a voice of reason and a relatable young woman who’s not afraid to speak her mind. Please write more! Suzy xx

I started listening to Emma on her Pretty Normal Me podcast where she mentioned the book was coming out soon after. Each chapter set out as a letter to different groups/people (even herself at different ages) each one will make you either laugh, cry, or think, maybe even a combination of them.
I can highly recommend this book and the podcast, both are well worth checking out!
Here's hoping there's another book sometime in the future!

Eloquently and humorously expresses everyday trials and tribulations. Great to realise it’s not just you and Great kudos to Em who’s so succinctly been able to translate such insecurities and observations into publishable words!
