Product Description

Product Description

This French Baroque icon from the early days of harmonia mundi has been 'download only' for some years and we are delighted that Herreweghe's benchmark Campra 'Requiem' is to be reissued at mid price, on hm gold, due to popular demand.

Review

This is historically informed performance at its very highest standard, and it is an absolute must-have for any French baroque enthusiast. The performance is highly convincing and emotionally engaging, transmitting Campra s dignified sense of piety in a most accomplished manner. --Jake Barlow, Music Web International April 2014

An absolutely superb and flawless recording of this, as yet, relatively unknown French Baroque requiem, made in 1987 at the Radio France studios.
Yet the more you listen to this well written, stunningly emotional, beautiful work from the mid 1690s, the more you will begin to wonder why it and its composer have not yet received wider acclaim in our time! A French Baroque requiem at its best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Sublime 26 Jun. 2002
By Joseph T. Madawela - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This is one of my favorie cds and since buying it about a month ago, I have listened to it over 200 times.( Perhaps it is now time that I buy a new copy!}.

The music is truly sublime and ethereal. The Kyrie (no.2 on the cd) is moving and truly otherworldly. It reminded me a bit of the Lachrymosa in Mozarts requiem. All The performers are excellent especially the countertenor Josep Benet of the Ensemble Organum . The Bass Steven Varcoe is also excellent as well. As is true of all Harmonia Mundi Recordings, this is a well produced and thoroughly researched cd certaily well worth the purchase price. Phillip Herreweghe and his Chapelle Royale has done a brilliant job in reconstructing the feel of the French Baroque.

So my friends, listen to the ethereal harmonies of heaven. Be transported to that sublime realm. If you believe in existence beyond this material plane, this music would serve as an ideal accompaniment to the soul's final journey Home.

Buy this CD you wont regret it.
