This book is fun to read. As an adult I can get bored with child language in non-fiction books, but this book kept me riveted. I am fascinated by the sheer number of uses the author has found for duct tape on camping trips including wrapping a few strips around a water bottle for emergencies. It is one of the best introductions to the world outside our front door that I have come across. The illustrations are clear and humourous. The science in the chapters on astronomy, weather, and naturalist sections is straightforward. The only part which lacks a little imagination is the advice on keeping a field journal.

This book is ideal for any wannabe family campers, die-hard campers, scout and guide leaders, forest school leaders and teachers who want to do more outdoor activities with children. It is very good value for the cover price. It is aimed at children aged 7 years and upwards. A useful present if you are stuck for a gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource book for kids camping 13 Sept. 2007
By Shelley C. Blackwell - Published on
Format: Paperback
I am using a camping theme in my 3rd-4th classroom this year. I saw this book on Amazon and decided to give it a try. It was all that I hoped it would be plus a lot more. The book is packed with pratical ideas for kids to use to prepare to go camping as well as while they are camping. The book is a permanent fixture on my desk and the kids and I are using it as a reference all through the day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dirty shoes build smart brains. 1 Oct. 2007

This is a great book that will spark many wonderful experiences with my daughter. For sure 5 stars!!
Major sections include activities, crafts, nature, and cooking. This was a logical organization, but as the father of a younger child I think it would have been nice to have some guidance and organization by age appropriateness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I had this book when I was a kid! 8 Feb. 2008

Camp Out! is full of creative and informative lessons and fun activities. Truly a unique book. Any kid from video game addict to natural born scout will find this book engaging! it contains kid-level explanations without talking down to kid-level. As an adult I enjoyed reading this book and felt the cartoons weren't too cutesy. Good for both boys and girls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only book you need for kid camping! 2 Mar. 2009

This book is awesome! It is chock-full of great ideas! This book covers everything from making all kinds of different knots to identifying animal tracks to outdoor games to the night sky and much, much more. I am helping with a Brownie troop getting ready to do an overnight camping trip and this book has helped tremendously with ideas of activities for the girls. If you can only afford one book--this is it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for kids 8-12 and adults too! 13 Aug. 2015

Cannot say enough about this book! I read it cover to cover and learned a ton. My son was interested but not up for fighting me for it. JK. I got it at the library but might buy a used one because it is so good! The information is really easy to comprehend and the topics are definitely kid-oriented and fun. They are varied as well - not just your typical survival stuff but entertainment and fun facts, etc. Great illustrations as well. I think I finally get how to use a compass now! I would say this would be best for kids in the range of 8 to 12 but not necessarily limited to that range. It's neither juvenile nor mature. Fantastic!
