This book is fun to read. As an adult I can get bored with child language in non-fiction books, but this book kept me riveted. I am fascinated by the sheer number of uses the author has found for duct tape on camping trips including wrapping a few strips around a water bottle for emergencies. It is one of the best introductions to the world outside our front door that I have come across. The illustrations are clear and humourous. The science in the chapters on astronomy, weather, and naturalist sections is straightforward. The only part which lacks a little imagination is the advice on keeping a field journal.

This book is ideal for any wannabe family campers, die-hard campers, scout and guide leaders, forest school leaders and teachers who want to do more outdoor activities with children. It is very good value for the cover price. It is aimed at children aged 7 years and upwards. A useful present if you are stuck for a gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for kids 8-12 and adults too! 13 Aug. 2015

Cannot say enough about this book! I read it cover to cover and learned a ton. My son was interested but not up for fighting me for it. JK. I got it at the library but might buy a used one because it is so good! The information is really easy to comprehend and the topics are definitely kid-oriented and fun. They are varied as well - not just your typical survival stuff but entertainment and fun facts, etc. Great illustrations as well. I think I finally get how to use a compass now! I would say this would be best for kids in the range of 8 to 12 but not necessarily limited to that range. It's neither juvenile nor mature. Fantastic!

I purchased 11 of these for our Tiger cubscouts and they were all thrilled to receive them from our outgoing Webelo 2s. All the other level scouts in our Pack wished they could have a copy, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars This books helps make camping simple and fun!! 8 Aug. 2013
By Lucky Mom - Published on Amazon.com

I had reserved this book twice from the library and finally just told myself I need to buy it (which is rare). It has several great recipe ideas and a lot of fun activites you can do with your kids while your camping or even just hanging out in your backyard. Even though it is written from a childs prospective it is just as much fun for adults. Boredom can often be a problem for us when we go camping but with all the craft projects, games, and fun activities in this book everyone has more fun. It also has a lot of tips to make the trip easier before you leave so make sure you read through it before you go.
