Review

‘Explosive… authoritative yet uncompromisingly tough… a gripping and at times astonishing account of the people who rule us’ Mail on Sunday

‘These pages are a masterclass in so-called “tick-tock” narrative – a minute-by-minute account, studded with detailed recollections and observations… A formidable achievement…Magisterial… If I were Mr Corbyn, I’d get busy reading’ Matthew D’Ancona, Evening Standard

‘As comprehensive an account of the coalition years as anyone could write so soon after the events’ Independent, Books of the Year

‘While Lord Ashcroft may have started a brief craze for pig jokes…The more interesting (and damaging) disclosures come in Cameron at 10’ Fraser Nelson, Telegraph

‘Rigorously researched, giving an insight into the inner workings of Cameron’s No 10 and the coalition that we have not seen before… While Ashcroft and Oakeshott’s Call me Dave should by no means be dismissed, ultimately the offering from Seldon and Snowdon feels a far more substantial look at an intriguing political leader’ Independent on Sunday

‘An immensely thorough work… it contains a more damaging passage than any in their rival's unauthorised work' Dominic Lawson, Sunday Times

‘A substantial piece of work – a blow-by-blow account, impeccably researched and carefully documented, of the highs and lows of the first Cameron administration. The authors appear to have enjoyed almost total access. Their judgements are on the whole balanced and the narrative compelling’ Chris Mullin, Observer

'A monumental first draft of history' John Rentoul, Independent

‘Where Seldon excels is in his understanding of political relationships. Seldon and Snowdon are adept at convincing friends and colleagues to talk candidly’ The Times

‘Seldon and Snowdon are particularly strong on foreign policy… an invaluable resource’ Daily Telegraph

‘Measured and thoughtful … a fascinating book’ James Bloodworth, Daily Beast

About the Author

Anthony Seldon is the author of multiple volumes on the premiership from Edward Heath to Gordon Brown, and is considered one of Britain’s pre-eminent political biographers and contemporary historians. He is the former head of one of the country’s leading independent schools, Wellington College, and has recently been appointed Vice-Chancellor of Buckingham University.

Peter Snowdon is a journalist and historian, and duty edits BBC Radio 4’s flagship ‘Today’ Programme. He has written the unrivalled account of the Conservative Party’s return to power under David Cameron, ‘Back from the Brink’, described by Daniel Finkelstein as ‘a superb new history of the last decade in Tory politics’.

The authors have collaborated on several books together, including the twin volume biography of Tony Blair – ‘Blair’ and ‘Blair Unbound’.

Seldon and Snowden, are as ever entertaining, intriguing and informative. He provides excellent character sketches of all the main figures in the Cameron Government whilst providing interesting new information. It consistently seems careful, well researched and reliable. This is a welcome contrast to its rivals. As would be expected at this stage no dramatic revelations about the Cameron Government; whilst this is not a book which will for ever transform the way Cameron is seen, it is a book which will immensely improve the readers understanding.
A must read for anyone interested in Politics.

This is a very thoroughly researched and well written account of David Cameron's last five years in power, ending with the unexpected victory in the May general election. Seldon and Snowdon organise their material thematically rather than strictly chronologically, which I found helpful. Some reviewers have commented on the use of the historical present tense, personally I find this conveys an immediacy to the story.

So what is the overall verdict on Cameron? The authors feel he bears closest comparison with Stanley Baldwin, the dominant Conservative PM of the 1930s who also wrestled with the leftovers of economic turmoil - (though ultimately in the eyes of history is a somewhat discredited PM as he completely missed the rise of Hitler.) Cameron was an effective manager, argue Seldon and Snowdon, dominating his cabinet and lacking any serious rival - unlike most of the previous PMs, except Blair, who were continually under pressure due to real or supposed plots. Cameron's "shield" was the Chancellor George Osborne and their close relations was to be the rock on which the government was built, especially around the economy. Osborne emerges as a somewhat enigmatic character, fiercely loyal to his boss, but clearly with one eye very much on what happens next post his departure. Cameron's curious decision to announce he would not seek a third term as PM, communicated seemingly (?) accidentally while chopping carrots, may yet come back to haunt him if he becomes a lame duck as his second term evolves.

The authors defend Cameron against the charge that he "doesn't really believe in anything much" arguing that this was the case with most Tory PMs, with one rather notable exception (think female if you are stuck).

This lengthy account of David Cameron's premiership is based on hundreds of interviews with senior politicians and commentators together with some documentary research. Unfortunately, the Freedom of Information Act has made politicians and senior civil servants very wary about written records hence this account lacks depth in places.

The authors are highly respected writers on political matters. Seldon until recently was the Headmaster of a major public school. He is a prolific writer , one who has written accounts of many British prime ministers. He says he will write no more. David Cameron we learn never expected to win the May 2015 election. When he did it ensured that his premiership will be viewed as one of significant historical importance.

If as he says he will not fight another election then David Cameron will become the second longest -serving Conservative PM since 1902. In May 2010 he was the youngest PM of any party since Liverpool in 1812. He was also the first PM to since the 1930's to head a peacetime coalition. Seldon has little regard for Nick Clegg's contribution to that coalition. He believes Osborne was the real deputy. According to the authors, Cameron's achilles heel is foreign affairs. This puts him in the same category as Obama, if true. He is accused of being unsophisticated and lacking in mastery of them. Very few have had this ability.

Seldon regards the Scottish Referendum as a near disaster, Gordon Brown an actual disaster, and Boris Johnson as a rival who needs to be kept at arms length. He reminds us that David Cameron had never held a cabinet post before becoming PM. He describes him as very likeable, loyal and collegiate. Seldon pays tribute to Sam, the PM's wife. He gives her much credit for keeping David steady.

with exceptional access, Seldon chronicles the key moments of the Coalition government. His obvious respect and confidence in Cameron shines through along with his disdain for the naivety and political ineptitude of Clegg and Miliband.

Unfortunately it reads like a textbook with little insight except at the end of this hefty volume: well-written but somewhat dull this pulls together the disparate threads of five key years in British politics and the evidence to support Seldon's contention that Cameron's record is better than the Eurosceptic press is piled up. However apart from the simple fact that the Tories got more votes in 2015, there is little assessment of his impact on the country leaving this feeling like a record of a private club rather than a Government. Maybe that is the implicit message that Parliament has got so divorced from most people's lives that a Prime Minister is best judged by his impact on political obsessives rather than their ability to change people's lives.
