The hit BBC drama series which tells the moving and true-to-life stories of a group of midwives working in London's East End in the 1950s.
Newly-qualified midwife Jenny Lee is the latest arrival at Nonnatus House, a convent in one of the poorest areas of London. Jenny is welcomed by the nuns and befriended by the other midwives – good-time girl Trixie, sensible Cynthia and fellow newcomer, the posh, fish-out-of water, Chummy.
We are introduced to the local community through the eyes of the young nurse as she cycles out to tend to her patients. Although the life that greets Jenny is a world away from what she’s used to, she immerses herself in the births, deaths, intrigues and romances of a community she rapidly learns to love.
“Jenny Agutter, Miranda Hart, Pam Ferris and newcomer Jessica Raine are all superb.” The Guardian
“Some of the most moving acting shown on prime time for many years ...a terrific drama” Daily Telegraph
“Utterly winning ...A drama to answer all our prayers" Sunday Times

Overall, this is a true to life series, the acting is brilliant especially with Miranda Hart. I would recommend this series to anyone involved in any type of nursing or interested in the social standards of the East End of London.....I am really pleased that they decided to make a series from Ms Worth's books.
Not for the squeamish, though, or anyone with an aversion to the rigors of childbirth!
As an adult family we have enjoyed every part of it. It tells of the daily struggles of a group of young midwives working in the slums of London. They are based in a convent in the 1930's, serving the preganant women of the poor neighborhood, so the antics of the convent add an amusing dimention to the story.
At first my husband was squeamish about the birth scenes, but he soon became totally absorbed in the drama and has watched the video several times.
It gives a wonderful insight into the life of families and the interaction of people as they live and mature in an often unfamiliar environement.
Miranda Hart gives a professional and amusing performance as a newly qualified midwife.
I did watch series 2, the Christmas specials and can't wait for series 3 in early 2014! Great acting from Jessica Raine, Pam Ferris and Jenny Agutter. Couldn't praise it enough!!
Quite simply brilliant.
It was one of those programmes that had you laughing, crying and holding your breath with every episode. It was well cast and well scripted.
The acting in this was superb. I will not name names because they were all good.
There is only one thing missing from the DVD that would have been a nice extra and that is some interviews with the cast.
