Product Description

Christmas is coming, and in Poplar the midwives of Nonnatus House are busier than ever. When an abandoned baby is discovered on the steps of the convent, the whole community rallies round to provide food and clothing, and to try and trace his mother. Nurse Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) meanwhile, gets caught up in the heartbreaking mystery that surrounds an elderly, semi-vagrant local woman, Mrs Jenkins (Sheila Reid). For newly married Chummy (Miranda Hart), other challenges await, as she pulls out all the stops to mount a truly memorable children's nativity play.

The Christmas special of the BBC drama, adapted from Jennifer Worth's memoirs, about a group of midwives working in East London in the 1950s. The discovery of an abandoned baby on the convent's doorstep proves to be a catalyst, as the community come together to try to trace the baby's mother. Meanwhile, Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) finds herself drawn into the mystery surrounding elderly local woman Mrs Jenkins (Sheila Reid), while Chummy (Miranda Hart) is determined to stage an unforgettable nativity play.

I watched this episode on BBC 1 at Christmas and loved it so much I had to buy it to accompany the first series I bought last year. The characters are all very believable and great actors and I'm glad the writers kept to the original books' stories as much as possible. Brilliant, and I look forward to receiving my copy of the second series which I have already pre ordered.

... My wife and myself viewed the first series, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. The Christmas Special was so great. My wife who trained as a Nurse in the 50s, could relate to these well presented stories. The side line to these stories, shows how far we have come in medical advancements.

I loved the first series.......so full of the human degradation and misery, the joy and simple happiness that was this dockland area of the 1950's. Teeming with life and all levels of strongly felt social classes of the time. Jessica Raine's portrayal of these people is both raw and endearing...............I had completely forgotten what life was like for women before the contraceptive pill became widely available!!!

The acting in this Christmas special is superb. A highly emotional episode, which was incredibly moving to watch.

I would give it six stars if I could.

I adore call the midwife and have series one also..if you haven,t watched this little cracker yet go ahead and treat yourself and you won,t be disappointed..AN array of the most talented actors and actresses around and Miranda Hart is brilliant as midwife chummy and so innocent but funny in her ways. Jenny Agutter, Vanessa Redgrave, are the heads of Nottannus House where all the midwifes live with the sisters of charity and the story lines are true to form and filmed as if it were in the actual time era so all the difficult births are even more edge of the seat and emotional to watch. Go ahead and buy this magnificent dvd and you will rush to complete the set.

This show is very well written. It is touching and is a very special show. Miranda Hart's presence mustn't be overlooked in this review - though 'everyone' is excellent Miranda has stolen our hearts and really makes a difference. All so well done! Excellent small parts filled with great actors. A real win every way you go!!

If you have seen any episodes of Call the Midwife then you already know what a great series it is, and the Christmas specials are just superb.
However please BE WARNED. Do not by this if you are buying the Series 1-3 or Series 1-4 Box sets as this and all the Christmas Specials are Included in the box sets, so you will Not Need to buy this.

But only four stars as (as usual for a BBC DVD) no decent extras.

But that's not the fault of the series itself, or the story being told here. If you love Call the Midwife you'll love this - if you don't, you probably won't even have a reason to read this review!!
