In this, the first of the Dragon Oracles Series, T J Garrett has aimed at combining the ingredients of traditional fantasy with a down to earth, compelling prose style. The effect is impressive, and as a reader I felt immediately sucked into a finely crafted fantasy world.
Garrett has succeeded in delivering a powerful story, replete with suspense and mystery, in which his protagonists find themselves tested to their limits as they are forced to embark on an unexpected journey across an unforgiving landscape.
I can only say that for lovers of well-written sword and sorcery style fantasy fiction, this book is a must.

Excellent fantasy adventure. The author is aiming for a classic fantasy trilogy and all the ingredients are in place: a large cast of characters, unusual races, a detailed world, and a journey that you can follow along on a map. The writing is easy-going and controlled, and the plot unfolds slowly in an enjoyable old-school arc that hints at a final battle at the end of the series: there are no modern Game of Thrones-style shocking turnarounds to spoil the mood!

The Call of the Crown is a very well written, imaginative and creative book which follows the journey of 7 characters to Bailyrn, the capital of Alerasmoya. The characters, are Elspeth Tanner ( the emissary's of Albergeddy's daughter wishing to join the Royal Guards), her brother Ealian, Daric Re'adh (Previous Royal Guard and paid escort of Elspeth and Ealian),Gialyn Re'adh ( Daric's son), Grady Dalesman (Daric's friend and former soldier also paid to escort Elspeth and Ealian), and two companions they pick up on route Olam ( a man of mystical character - won't spoil anything further in the description) and Arfael ( a giant - again I will leave further description so as not to spoil). As the book develops you learn each member of the unlikely band of travellers have a role in a changing world around them, a role which develops and deepens the characters, and grows their personality and potential as the book itself develops. The story itself changing your opinion of each character throughout.
Meanwhile in Braylair Brea, the guardian of the dragons, is preparing the dragons for a foretold event of world changing magnitude thousand of years in the making.
Garrett's creative descriptions adding pictures to his words taking your through each location in graphic detail.
A really enjoyable book cannot wait until the next in the series is published..an excellent read.

The first few chapters drag on a little and are a bit dull but once the journey of the main characters begins it becomes very hard to put down. The author can sometimes get carried away with the descriptions from time to time but other than this the book is well written and a very interesting read. I recommend it to any fan of fantasy fiction.

Fantasy novels have enjoyed a renaissance since the Lord of the Rings et al have lit up the cinema but quality reads of epic proportions remain rare outside of the established classics.

T.J. Garrett's first novel suggests a new star is entering the ferment. A weight tome on it's own account, it clearly represents just the start of a much larger masterwork, introducing characters who are clearly ripe for development and a world rich with ideas and detail to provide that development as they undertake their epic journey.
