In this world created by a sentient vocaloid program, μ (Mu), reality and fantasy has become blurred, allowing people to relive their high school years in bliss. Yet in this seemingly beautiful and perfect world, something is amiss. Escape from this false paradise with your fellow students and return to reality in The Caligula Effect: Overdose!.

Hardware Platform: Nintendo Switch
First the good: This game has a genuinely innovative and interesting combat system. It gives you the ability to chain actions across your party, play out a limited simulation of your actions and revise your choices before you finalise your attacks. For example you can set up an attack with one character which launches an enemy into the air and time it correctly with another character's attack specifically designed to hit launched enemies. The simulations you can view also display a projected accuracy rate, so for example you might be able to see that there's a 70% chance that the actions will play out as simulated. In theory this allows for quite deep, strategic and satisfying combat. But...
Next the bad: Literally everything else.
The difficulty level is far too easy on normal mode and even lacking a little challenge on hard (except a few bosses), making it difficult to actually use the decent combat system in a meaningful way.
Characters are mainly generic and uninteresting, with one or two slight exceptions.
Dungeon design is really generic. They're usually just simple mazes of corridors and rooms with repeating backgrounds and features. What's worse is you usually have to do each area twice - once as the "good guys", once as the enemies, with no meaningful difference between each run through
Character design lacks variety. With a reasonably sized roster of characters it can be hard to really recall who's who.
There's a system to develop relationships and connections with hundreds of NPCs who can ultimately be recruited to your party in times when you're down a character or two. It proved useful twice and completely meaningless the rest of the time. Seems like a real wasted opportunity. Perhaps this (and some other systems which seemed to have no relevance in my play-through) would have more impact on a second play-through but I can't imagine many people having the patience or inclination to actually do that.
In summary, the combat system is good but would have been much more enjoyable in literally any other RPG - a real shame.
