If you like good comedy films you will hate this.
If you are a fan of boxing movies then you will hate this even more.
Give it a very wide berth.
All in all, this film looks and feels cheap.
Right from the start to the end, this is a laugh. The jokes are well written and excecuted by the actors perfectly. The movie tells the story of jimmy the local milkman, who accidently lands himself into a world title boxing match. He has only 7 days to prepare for the fight.
It starts off being presented by the narrator of the film, played in usual form by Mark Heap ('Brian' from Spaced - also stars in The Green Wing). His connection to the brilliant Spaced seems to have influenced the direting, with shots/cuts and other directorial tricks remeniscent of the series, and ergo Shaun Of The Dead.
Just like 'Shaun', this is a truly original, undeniably British comedy, and refreshingly different to the run-of-the-mill Working Title stuff (Four Weddings and a Wimbeldon on Notting Hill), so (un?)fortunately, we're spared Hugh Grant, and although there are Americans in this, all the lead parts are played by true Limey's (shock, horror!)
That's not to say that this film is anything other than a silly bit of pratting around for very little reason, but it is genuinely funny, in a very British way. Ultimately, its about a milkman, who accidentally knocks out a championship contender, who's mickey mouse manager talks the poor milkman into taking on 'the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world', when he's never even had a fight.
From the press conference in the local pub, to the chav-motivation specialist, to the drunk old trainer, this movie is full of the ironic charm that permeates every british great from the Italian Job to Withnail.
If you want something entertaining, but not challenging to your intellect or concentration, you can't go far wrong with this.
i was so fond of the movie that i went through pains to get a region 1 dvd ( because i'm an american ) which i actually ordered from mexico. for all you brits, you should grab it.
