In August 1347 six bare footed men knelt before King Edward III with nooses around their necks to beg for their lives and present him with the keys to Calais. About the Author

Julian Whitehead read History at Oxford after which he joined the Intelligence Corps and spent a full career in military intelligence; his appointments have included Chief of Staff of the Defence Intelligence Centre and Deputy Director of Defence Security. After leaving the army he spent ten years as Security Advisor to Historic Royal Palaces and is now retired and lives in Oxfordshire. Pen and Sword have publish his previous books Cavalier and Roundhead Spies in 2009, Rebellion in the Reign of Charles II in 2017, Cromwell and his Women in 2018 and Espionage in the Divided Stuart Dynasty 1685-1715 in 2020 --This text refers to the hardcover edition.

Calais - a unique study

After 1066 England had close links with Normandy and South West France following the marriage of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine . This study by Julian Whitehead shows how Edward III’s claim to the French throne led to even greater involvement following the outbreak of the 100 years war . The first major battle at Crecy was followed by the surrender of Calais in 1347 . Until its loss in 1558 it became the base for English activeties in France and a major trading centre sending two MPs to parliament . This is a complex tale of how the relations between the two countries evolved . In later centuries Calais has continued to be a vital link with Europe and a base for threatened invasions either way as recently as 1940 . The author has succeeded in bringing the many strands together - highly recommended .
