Really enjoyed reading about the genesis of the show, and all the machinations that Barney Rosenzweig had to go through to get the show on air and the constant battles he had to keep it on air. It was quite revealing about the off-air characters of Daly & Gless.

However... it's an autobiography and is therefore quite one-sided. Although the author readily admits his faults, the overall tone is constantly that the author is the injured party and everyone else is 'the enemy', which gets a bit tiresome after a while.

Its also not a 'great read' generally. He uses a lot of insider terms that mean little to a layman (and even less to a British layman), so some of the arguments with studios / networks etc. are a little difficult to understand.

Still, for fans of the show only, I'd definitely recommend it.

As one review warned this has a lot about the machinatios of the studios, some of which I really didn't follow but I liked Rosenzweig's apparent honesty - particularly about his stars(who we all want to know about). Possibly this is reflective of the ethos of the series which, I believe was ahead of its time, and which believed in honest portrayal. Nowadays it seems, for various reasons, readers get a 'whitewash' or deemed acceptable for public consumption account of 'stars' and not as here an informed account of their working lives. Of course Rosenzweig writes after the event but his account does not patronise the reader that it was all 'roses' and to a degree includes himself in any disagreements.
Good selection of photos too. Thank you, Barney.

I was a big Cagney and Lacey fan and I'd heard about this book before Barney had even finished it. So I was really pleased to see it on Amazon. I was expecting lots and lots of anecdotes about the two main stars. What it's mainly about is how the programme got off the ground and more about the production side of it than anything else. But if you are a true collector of C&L memorabelia, you should buy it. To be honest, I only read about two thirds of it, but will probably pick it up again one day.

I get the impression that Barney wanted to write his autobiography but knew no one would buy it unless he focused on C&L. Consequently, this often feels like two books sewn together. However, if you're a big C&L fan, it's easy to skip the other chapters, but if you have any interest in the history of television then you won't want to. Rozensweig is shockingly - in the context of celeb books - frank (i imagine his lawyer got a bit hot under the collar reading this) and is a flagrant gossip. Plus, his Cagney and Lacey stories are incredible. I'm a little surprised to learn that Tyne Daly is still speaking to him!

Good book if you are a fan. Bit wordy in places, but skip through to the stuff you enjoy and it's worth the read
