Cafe del mar is the best chillout serie i ever listened to. Cds from this serie don't need any recomendation. I bought this release because i coudn't find an original editions in a decent price. I paid 3.5 for this and it's a great price. But there is one "thing" with this release. You pay less and you get "less". I mean, the music is the same but cover art and paper work is "minimal". In fact you get only original music with cheap cover art. If you are interested only in music then it's a great buy, but if you "collect" music albums and "the rest" is equally important to you, then look for original, one cd editions. Music - 5stars, art work 2-3 stars.

5 stars for the price as well as the content, with a little bit of confirmation bias thrown in! I don't care about not getting the original artwork and liner notes as it's the music I want, but I know that others may mark this issue down on that score. I'm not sure where Jose Padilla fits into the timeline of chillout music, but he's close to the start of it all. It's important to know that the whole Cafe del Mar CD series is based on the earlier series of C-60 cassette tapes he made and sold from the desk at the Cafe del Mar in Sant Antony in Ibiza. When he got the gig there in the early 90s, he started the practice of playing his own selection of chillout/ambient tracks that built to a climax as the sun went down over the island of Sa Conillera, opposite. The point is that the tracks flowed into each other like a story and the first few in the Cafe del Mar CD series, with the tracks selected and mixed by Padilla, certainly live up to the tradition of the live event. These CDs are from 1996 and 1997, by which time Padilla's selections were a bit less eclectic than they had been five years before - no Penguin Cafe Orchestra here. He still finds room for tracks by Pat Metheney, Stan Getz and John Martyn though and none of those is instinctively 'chillout'. At the price, these double CDs are a steal and if you want the original issues with the full art work and liner notes you'll pay a lot more - just check the prices on Amazon and you'll see what I mean.

What do you say about CDM, I'm came late to this project joining so to speak with Volume 12 and have everything now up to 18. So now I'm filling In with earlier volumes and they don't disappoint, this volume and the others were the only CD's I took on a late holiday to the US recently . Beautiful and relaxing music with a series of connected and mixed genres within this CD, buy It and start collecting
