If you have a PC with USB outlets, and a television with an HDMI inlet, and, like me, you have little ability to do anything "clever" with your computer, television: this is the one for you.
Why? Because the product is faultless, and, even more, because if you do get stuck, (like me...), the technical support from Cable Matters is so good I cannot imagine anything better. It was like having a technician, who spoke in plain English and organised all the advice and instructions in easy and clear stages, showing me what to do in my own study.
Anyone who can get me so quickly and efficiently sorted out with a product like this is a saint and a genius.
Brilliant product, brilliant people.
That said, this item does enable this. I am now able to run two 24 inch monitors and the Macbook screen. This is ideal for me. As a web developer, it is much easier to code using one screen and see the results of your coding in another. The third display serves to enable you to read the specs of the job etc. So, I am happy with the fact that this has enabled my to set up my work station the way I want it.
On a slightly negative note, the set up CD that came with the item had out of date drivers. The Cable Matters drivers download web page could benefit from someone who could write clear instructions. After downloading the wrong drivers, twice, I eventually got the right ones and the device worked. Apparently, the support for Apple's Mavericks operating system is not good. I downloaded the drivers for the previous operating system. So far it's working fine. There is the occasional blinking of the screen, but it doesn't happen often enough to be an issue.
With this nifty thing though, all I have to do is connect my HDMI cable to the adapter, connect the HDMI end to a monitor, connect the adapter lead to a USB 3.0 port (although you can use USB 2.0), download the driver from the website and away you go.
And as opposed to the Matrox box, it doesn't just create one huge display across two monitors. If you make a video full screen, it will actually stay on one screen without that horrible bezel in the middle. I personally connected another monitor to the single mini-DisplayPort on my MacBook to create this multiple monitor setup. Check out my screenshot.
The small device and software arrived promptly and within 15 minutes the easy-to-install software was loaded, and the small magic white box connected via an HDMI cable to the telly (an LG something-or-other). The software effectively adds another monitor (the telly) to your laptop and offers size adjustment along with resolution control.
Picture quality is superb... lip sync perfect, and now we seldom see the wretched buffering twirly thingy. All-in-all, a great bit of kit.
Decided I ought to read the manual, and found I needed to make a minor settings change for both issues, and now everything is working as it is supposed to. No apparent issues playing back video via USB 2.0 (8GB RAM installed in the laptop).
Couple of caveats;
The software installer (which came on a full-size CD-ROM disc) does not show any completed message, which is a little unnerving. Again, reading the manual, this is intentional, and not indicative of a problem.
One thing I do find is that Microsoft Media Center does suffer from some "flashing" when viewing particular windows within the application. I personally don't think this is down to the adaptor, but down to Windows Media Center itself, as it does not manifest itself when using Windows Media Player, or other applications.
Excellent Product with clear instructions and an extremely helpful setup utility.
I use this on both a Dell laptop (Win7 64-bit) and a Macbook Pro.
When running the setup utility it correctly identified 2 USB drivers that required updating, and pointed me to the correct website for driver installations, which went well with no issues and no restart required.
After the HDMI adapter driver installation and the required subsequent reboot, the adapter correctly identified my connected display (a Dell 27" running 2560x1440 resolution) and gave me that extra monitor capability I required.
I believe that the quality of the supplied software, the ease at which it identified & corrected compatibility issues and then provided easy configuration, differentiates it from perhaps many other products.
I'm so happy.
