I don't intend to carry a laptop with me, but the special compartment will be great for keeping newspapers and magazines in good condition. Pleased with my purchase so far and don't see any visibly obvious reason why that would change.
(Additional note, added 13/04/14, after use: I took my bag on holiday for one week, with a camera, binoculars, two small portable radios, a toilet bag and a couple of magazines in it and one of the shoulder straps is now disappointingly starting to part company with the top of the bag. It would appear that this has been due to a quite minimal surplus of material being allowed for the sewing in of the strap).
I held off writing a review because I wanted to see if it really was waterproof, and I was caught in what felt like a torrential downpour the other day, the bag remained completely waterproof and all my attempts at coursework were saved! hooray! lol. I wouldn't normally gush about a backpack but I am genuinely impressed, especially within this price range. A must-buy!
Theres always a negative!!! I just wonder about the very front pouch (there are 4 compartments: laptop, main, front, and then a smaller pouch), it does not have a zip like the others and is open from the top... surely on a waterproof bag that would just fill up in the rain. It didn't happen to me but I don't know if that was a fluke or it it is designed to release the water. I would suspect the latter.
Well there are 2 compartments - one at the back which is padded and designed for carrying electronic equipment, and one at the front for carrying the rest of your stuff.
My 15.6" slim-but-'widescreen' laptop only just squeezes in to the very tight padded section - but puts enormous strain on the zip and I'm not sure how waterproof it would be when carried like that.... also I can see the zip breaking very quickly when used like this. Really this back section is designed for 'slim' 14" laptops and smaller - if you have an old style 14" laptop that is quite thick then it still might not fit - i.e. if it has a deep base and fat screen lid. ( I had a much larger concern about waterproof quality - read below. )
When people say they can easily fit their 17" laptop in this bag, they are referring to the front section which is quite roomy but is not padded and the material is quite thin. Putting my 15.6" laptop in the front section results in it tilting outwards making it irritating to carry - flapping around in there unless I pad it out with lots of other stuff.
Finally the build quality is quite poor - maybe the material is rip-stop showerproof, but the seams are not taped and in fact they do rip quite easily. On mine the rucksack arrived with a hole in it where the zipper had ripped away from the main rucksack material - a rip that would only get worse as time went by and made the waterproof claims redundant. I sent mine back for a refund and won't bother re-ordering; I'll shop for an alternative.
So if you need a padded section for a 'small' electronic device, and a roomy front section for everything else, and are happy that the build-quality is reflected in the price then go for it - but I can't recommend it....
