I have had this bag for a few years now and it's perfect for packing all my stuff in. Sometimes I don't even need to neatly place things in I can go nuts and the bag will fit everything and wont cost me extra to fly with. No weighing or last minute doubt at check in. The strapping around the sides has stayed firm despite my many blunders and the time I got it caught in the rotating doors - if anything I was sure that the bag would survive me! The padding on the straps is an essential and the only thing that could make this better (dare I say) - is wheels on the bottom from when I have packed what feels like 4 bowling balls and sand.
This isn't just a great bag for travelling, it's a great bag for life. I am fully converted to the cult of travel bag and have used this in the past to carry everything from excess shopping home and staying over at friend's houses. I can only assume the bag is immortal too after the things I have done to it - great job all around!
I was amazed to discover recently just how large a bag was permissable as cabin luggage!
I used this last month for a week in Spain and found it to be a perfect size for me.
I packed a light rain coat, micro fleece, shoes, shirts, t-shirts, shorts, undies, socks etc. Plus all the usual electrical 'stuff' that we seem to need nowadays and had plenty of room to spare. Easily enough for 7-9 days. Internal pockets are well thought out and a good size.
It was comfortable to carry, either by hand or on my back, although it was slightly heavy. (As already reviewed, perhaps I should have packed less!)
Stands upright on its own, which is always a good thing, and the internal pockets are readily accessible.
I did use Cabin Max packing cubes with this back pack. It's the first time I've tried these and I can honestly say I will never travel again, even on short trips, without using them. Fantastic for organising and keeping accessible, anything you pack.
Thought the colour was different and recognisable, without being too 'in your face'. Seems to be well made and strong, with heavy zips.
Will definitely buy again should I need another. Highly recommended.
1) There is a complete lack of shape, or structure, even in the base. This means that you have to pack carefully to avoid bulges which prevent the bag from fitting in the airline checking frame.
2) Due to the lack of structure in the base, it is also very difficult to get it to stand up (as pictured) when not carrying it on your shoulder, which is bad because...
3) There is no sternum cross strap across the shoulder straps, which means the weight is always on the edge of your shoulders. Considering the size and intended purpose of the bag, it is likely to be quite heavy, and so can result in a lot of discomfort.
It's got a lot of space inside, we've managed to get clothes for 2 people for 5-day breaks into it no problem. The flat front compartment has lots of mesh compartments to store essentials that you need to get at while waiting for/on the plane such as books, Gameboy, Kindle, snack bars, toothbrush etc. There is also another flat zip compartment at the front that I always use for the documents we'll need frequently and quickly such as boarding passes and itineraries. If you're not taking that much stuff or you just want to force the tons of things you've jammed into it into submission, you can use the 4 compression straps.
While the carrying straps are sturdy, robust and padded, they are not ergonomic and carrying this backpack over long distances when full and heavy becomes uncomfortable quickly, my back usually starts hurting after about 15 minutes.
Another shortcoming in my opinion is that there are no subcompartments in the big compartment. While it does fit a LOT of stuff, it all gets jumbled into one big mess after a while and I frequently have trouble finding small items of clothing like socks in between the big items even though I neatly tucked them in one place at the beginning.
If they ever produce the same bag with an ergonomic carrying system and subcompartments, I'll be all over it. Meanwile, I'm happy with this one as it is!
