At only 90 odd pages, this served as a nice bridge between the epics I normally read.
I would read more from Matt Shaw.
The story follows Craig and his family as they take a much needed vacation to the family cabin in the wilds of the US. An unfortunate incident involving the locals occurs which disrupts the families plans of a quiet, restful break. Alone in the cabin Craig is haunted by the memories of his father's tales of restless spirits in the woods and he is driven into a state of panic by unexplained noises all around him. The story is tense and gradually builds to a shocking and unexpected climax.
Read this book alone, on a dark night and prepare to be scared witless.
This was something totally different from Matt. Loosely based on legends locals tell of the local asylum cum retreat, it is a well crafted and very creepy ghost story. It is very easy to immerse yourself totally in the story and be completely unaware of your surroundings. It starts off relatively slowly - and the tension builds up quietly and unannounced in the background until you get walloped in the face by an ending I TOTALLY did not expect! The scary bits were REALLY scary, so much so that I actually scared myself at one point! As a departure of sorts from Matt, I am pleased to say it works, and works well.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I couldn't quite believe what I was reading. It was horrific, tragic, gory and just plain terrifying all in equal measures. This was a horror story to rival the likes of Stephen King and James Herbert. The Cabin shows just how much Matt Shaw's writing has evolved over the course of the year and I have to say, that I will be watching for more from this guy.
The story progressed at a steady pace, building up to the most tension-filled moments before a climatic finale. The characters were well-rounded and we learnt the background on them and their relationships through the course of the story.
I was engrossed in this story from the get-go and couldn't wait for each opportunity to read further. If you like your horror to be dark, sinister and creepy as hell, this is the book for you.
Thanks, Matt :)
