I love this book, it is so readable. The illustrations are truly delightful. 'Live a calmer, healthier life' it says on the cover & it just goes to show how we have become so used to buying products that we do not really need & the environment certainly doesn't either. I was so pleased with the book I bought another one straight away for my daughter. The book is divided into sensible sections covering keeping house, using energy, 'growing your own', organically, preservation, herbal remedies & uses & making your own inspired gifts. I was minded to buy white vinegar & baking powder in bulk to start immediately on my new way of cleaning. This is a book that you can dip into constantly as the need arises. Maybe its use in schools would help combat our love of consumerism! Perhaps not but it should certainly be used as a tool to teach us to improve the way we now do things.

I've wanted to read "Cabbages and Roses: Guide to Natural Housekeeping" for years and I haven't been disappointed, because the book is packed with good information about how to live and keep a house "naturally". The pictures are beautiful - bright, homey, rustic. Some of them are gorgeous! I felt that the emphasis on the "save the planet" reasons for housekeeping took a bit of the sparkle out of the book, simply because the stats are going to age to the book and in ten years time we're all sure to be told something new about the state of the planet. All in all, however, this is a practical AND lovely introduction to natural housekeeping, gardening, washing and LIVING.
