This is a wonderful record. I found it in Harpenden library on cassette 30 years ago and it's one of the very few albums to have stuck with me ever since. 'Cathedral', 'Just A Song Before I Go', 'See The Changes' and the sublime 'Carried Away' are all buried deep inside me. The reviewer who describes this album as "Decent Not Brilliant" is either Neil Warnock or Neil Young's mum.

8 years had passed before Crosby, Stills & Nash reformed for the 'CSN' album of 1977. As an album, it lacks the earlier energy of their 1969 debut, and opts instead for a more relaxed feel. Stills returns to form with the acoustic gem 'See My Changes' and produces the latin-influenced 'Fair Game.' Meanwhile Crosby reveals himself to be the "most opinionated man" in 'Anything At All' - a soothing piece. The highlights of the album come from Nash - producing the anthemic mood piece 'Cathedral' and the simplistic brilliance of 'Carried Away.' This was certainly a worthy comeback from the trio, and deserves exploring further.

By 1977 CSN were considered bloated and unfashionable relics, which is amazing as it was only eight years on from their era-defining debut album and three years since the massive stadium tour of 74. 'The American Beatles'? I approached this album with a fair amount of caution! Unable or unwilling to change with the times, like say Neil Young, it's probably to their credit that they stuck to their guns and did what they do best. Acoustic guitars and three part harmonies to the fore on what is a united effort, the egos well and truly left at the door. What is most surprising, considering the recent disappointing solo/duo efforts that preceded this, is that all three are at the top of their games and all bring quality songs to the table. Stills' 'See The Changes' wouldn't have been out of place on their debut, 'In My Dreams' & 'Shadow Captain' surely rank as some of Crosby's finest and Nash supplies the 'hit' with 'Just A Song Before I Go', though 'Carried Away' is a far better song. Stills is actually quite restrained throughout, only cutting loose on 'Run From Tears' with a cracking electric guitar solo. If i have any criticism's, it's that it lacks an 'Almost Cut My Hair' moment, that would scuff some of the smooth edges away on what is a polished sounding album. I also seem to be alone in thinking that Nash's 'Cathedral' is a bit over the top, but these are minor complaints really! This is probably their last great album together.

I am not sure that precise historical context matters all that much - this is just a great timeless album that should be applauded regardless of its specific point in rock music history. This is one of the best CS&N albums - the group showed no hint of the dumbing down that others like EW&F, Jefferson Starship, Journey, Genesis, Yes and Chicago - in fact a fair proportion of great artists that started in the late 60s/early 70s - were showing as the 70s drew to a close. The 80s held new bands and delights in store, but the older bands continued alongside them and this 1977 offering is I can happily say vintage CS&N. It is to their early masterpieces as, say, "Physical Graffiti" is to "Led Zep II", or "Animals" is to "Meddle". Floyd and Led Zep clung onto quality longer than most, and so did CS&N. To me, it's the music that counts - not the latest tribal focus. I like acid rock, prog rock and punk rock among many other genres - they all produced a lot of good music. Sometimes a hippy/flower power track is better than a punk one; sometimes the reverse is true - it depends on the particular tracks in question. On "CSN" there is a lot of full-on electric music - I particularly like "I give you give blind"; this is not on the 4CD best of pack, but deserved to be.

Another purchase to simply replace my LP with the CD version but how lucky was I to discover that this has been re-released on the Audio Fidelity label. It was with bated breath I took my first listen to see how this compared but I was not to be disappointed. I cannot recommend this cd version highly enough. The sound quality is stunning. Some of the tracks almost seem to be in 3D it's that good! This is therefore extremely good value for money too.
Unhesitatingly recommended.

Brilliant album. Got into Crosby Stills and Nash through their 'carry on' 2 disc box set which is a condensed version of the 4 disc box set which has a lot of alternative versions of their classic songs. This made me buy 'CSN' and it is an incredible mix of styles. Genius band.

As a very mature music listener who can go back to The Beatles first appearing on Thank Your Lucky Stars singing Please Please Me, there are thousands of albums I've listened to over those 48 years. I listen to and enjoy all sorts but this is one of very best a definite one for the Desert Island bag. The 3 of them are all on top form, Crosby's Shadow Captain, In My Dreams and Anything at All are marvellous. Stills weighs in with the latinesque Fair Game, Run from Tears and Dark Star (about Rita Coolidge?) and our Graham surpasses himself with Cathedral, Carried Away and of course the wonderful Just a Song Before I Go. I always felt the 3 of them worked better without Neil Young, an artist who I like as well, but without him, this album is real gem, their best by far.
