I know it's a strong claim to make but this album stands up to anything today. Musically, the band were light years ahead of their peers and it shows on the whole of this album, especially SUS and It Was Cold. The first band I ever saw in 1979 and it will remain one of my greatest memories.

I first listened to this record in 1980 and it is amazing how well this record has stood the test of time. Even today they run circles around most bands that pass as "punk". Awesome playing, totally rocking and powerful punk and a good dosage of reggae-influences make this an all time classic. This LP and the pre "Grin And Bear It" singles are all you should look for by the band. Take a pass on the RUTS D.C. stuff (which is still decent). Of course it is better to have this on vinyl... but oh well.

Ruts were a band way ahead of their time. Bands like Nirvana seem to have picked up, ironically, from where this band's future was cut short: the death of its vocalist. Each song on Crack is strong and powerful and proof of the musical ability Ruts were renowned for. The order of the songs (pure genius, if deliberate) takes the listener on a rough journey through an urban landscape, from the raw punk of "Something that I said" through the menace of "It was cold" and the contemplativeness of "Jah Wars" to the sheer live climax of "Human Punk". After all these years it still sounds fresh and important. A perfect album indeed, that moves way beyond the boundaries of the era it was created in.

This band had it all and this album is a real landmark in my view. Excellent production too. One of the few albums from that era that still packs a punch. Fast, slow, moody, uplifting. All faces of 1978 punk get air time here. If you want to know where US band like Dag Nasty (and the rest of the DC crowd) and countless early 90's UK outfits went to school you should check this album out. Massively influential and quite rightly so.

This album goes down as one of my all time greats and I am amazed at how little attention it gets. It's packed full of awsome tracks like "Dope for Guns" and "Somethin' that I said" and of course Babylon's burning. Full of raw punk energy with a good layer of reggae inspired rhythm. It captures the ambience of the times with songs like SUS and Jah Wars.

I was lucky enough to be in the crowd at the Marquee when the last tracks were recorded. What a night and what a band. They would wipe the floor with most of todays offerings.

what an underated band the ruts were they blow the clash and other bands of the same era out of the water with their album the crack.the cover is a classic in itself on the same par as the sgt pepper cover it was painted by artist john howard and should be classed as a classic cover.the album itself has so many classic cuts like babylons burning, sus, something that i said,it was cold the whole album is so forgotten by so called music experts.its one of my all time top 5 albums and should be more recognised for what it is A CLASSIC.

The Ruts managed to put pundits of 'Punks cant play' in there place. All of the musicians on this album were top class. The lyrics were sharp, and the pace full on. If you like your music tunefull, load, and punk, with the reggee overtone that only this band done sooooo well, then this album is for you.

a superb album and a sad loss to music that the death of messr: Owen cut the output of songs short or the Ruts would have been around for many years producing great quality music
