Solid performance which grows on you

I bought this album on their reputation of the previous 3, and must admit I didn't like it at first. However, after a few rounds this is yet another extremely well crafted album from a band unheard of in the UK (like most good music! no they play instruments and dont wear skirts!)
Compared to thier previous albums, this is more matured, yet still retaining thier folky rock sound with exquisite use of orchestral instruments and melodic vocals. You cannot compare them to any other band as they are in a league of thier own with this album. If you like big acoustical guitars and great vocals then BUY it!!

"A collective masterpiece"-Stephen Anderson

Definitely a band that is far too underated and who deserve their rightful recognition. Collective soul continuously look for new and inventive musical paths and approach them with stylish and mature musical intellect, and in this album they have done just that! Dosage is a progression in the right direction, with the musical talent of each member to complement it.If dosage is this good, I eagerly await in anticipation for their next release.

What a refreshing change to have a group produce such a great CD in these days of one note, two word junk songs. Dosage is a mix of INXS, Pink Floyd and U2, all tracks are written with words that actually make sense, with a tune that I'm not embarassed at listening to in the car.
OK, it may not reach No1 in the UK, but these days, that is a compliment.
If, like me, you enjoy listening to music rather than machines, this is definitely worth buying

As a life-long fan of Roger Waters, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Genesis, Zepp, Dire Straits, Michael Jackson, Sarah Maclachlan, One Republic, UB40, Diana Krall, Peter Cincotti, Michael Buble, Scissor Sisters, Allison Krause, Union Station, Nickleback, AC/DC, Ryan Shupe & the Rubberband, Bob Dylan, the Doors, The Beatles, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Bach,and and hundreds more - and not in this order .. do I really need to go on?

Buy this album, and every other Collective Soul album you can get your hands on - YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!

As to the critic of people magazine that wrote of Ed Roland's lyrics being "hollow" ... I suspect that at that particular desk one will find a cardboard replica of a self-styled journalist with a chipped & faded slot machine for a mouth!
Anyone who takes the time to read the lyrics will see the genius of Ed's words and his ability to reach deep into all our souls - this is collective soul.

The "collective soul" was originally an epithet that poor Ayn Rand created to sum up our unfortunate human tendency to behave, collectively, like sheep. Now, though, thanks to a soul named Ed Roland, who apparently,likes phrases that sound cool, most now know the "Collective Soul" as a powerfully positive name for a small collection of souls who, when they come together, make some of the best and most heartning~sometimes even quirky~music, ever. I remember remarking to my wife after listening, in one sitting, to all they had out at that time and for the first time, that Collective Soul would be an influence felt for generations to come. That was easy to predict because a cool name for musicians that record cool music will tend to do that.

Collective Soul also does several cool things to make their music available in unexpected ways. For instance, a brand new song named 'Burn" is available on the soundtrack CD for that most excellent and infinitely re-watchable concert film they did with the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra. It is a song so dang good that on any official CD release it could have been a hit. Instead they give you this song for free, well at least for the price of the CD which has the music that you bought it for. Score. Cool.

Another cool thing that they do is sporadically hide unnamed tracks on their releases, like they did with this one. The hidden track on this one, though, has a title. It is their hit "She Said", which was from the soundtrack for the movie Scream 2, if Wikipedia is right.

The question that burned in me, though, as I hit the button and made the purchase of this import CD, just so I could have a hard copy of the bonus track "Persuasion" was, "Is 'She Said' on this CD?!?" The answer, of course, is, "Yes, it is". It comes in after "Persuasion" instead of after "Crown"- which, by the way, is sang for Ed and Dean's much beloved father with the same level of emotion and passion... and control, that Harry Nilsson brought to that cool Badfinger song.

Of course, every other song from the State-sided, non-bonus tracked CD is on this CD with "Heavy", "Run" and "Compliment" the high points for me.

"Persuasion" is, in case you are wondering, a song that I found worth the cost of this second CD. Or, should you be considering adding 'Dosage' to your purchase today and if you found this review helpful, I think you will agree after a listening that the expense and the wait time needed to get this import to you would be worth it just to have "Persuasion" at your command.

Even the best albums usually have a mix of good/bad tracks. For that reason, it's wonderful to be able to buy tracks individually. For me, this album is an exception. I love EVERY track. And because of this it was better/cheaper to buy the album as a whole. I highly recommend this album. I am a huge fan of Collective Soul and I enjoy tracks from all their albums, but this is a step above.
