I like this, I like Lloyd Cole. Atmospheric. Cole is an interesting character. I did hear that the gold disc he received for his debut Commotions elpee, framed and all, was donated by Cole to the café at the end of his road.

Taking a leaf from Eno's 'Music For Films' manual, it is a series of pieces that creates moods and atmospheres, mostly reminiscent of NYC for me but others may feel differently as music of this type is universal in its application. Eno and ambient music enthusiasts will find much to like here. I am a huge fan of Lloyd's song based work and his extremely poignant lyrics, but this is an area I'd like to see him explore further. Eno has has many copy his work over the years but most fail to inject any character into what they do. Lloyd avoids covering ground that Eno has already covered by doing just that, giving us a series of soundscapes that are uniquely LC.

First things first; 'Plastic Wood' is not the album that will re-ignite Lloyd's career. A collection of ambient(ish) instrumentals, it bears no resemblance to anything he has done previously. I find it rather puzzling that some of this stuff made it as far as a recording studio let alone a record store. It's hard to see who this collection is aimed at as it's almost impossible to find anything to recommend it to fans of the man's back catalogue, especially when the excellent, song-based collection of lost songs 'Etc.' is currently on release.

Taking a venture into the ambiant side of things, this is not what you would expect from Lloyds earlier works. However given the right surroundings and mood this can be a collection of very enjoyable work. The comparisons given in other reviews to Eno are well justified, it is a step in a different direction, a brave and intersting collection

This is a cracking little album of ambient mood pieces, I'm not familiar with Eno's work particularly but this is very reminiscent of work by Steve Kilbey.

OK, so as you've probably guessed by the other reviews this isn't a song-based Lloyd album, but is still stunning in it's approach.

I think one reviewer was particularly cruel in his remarks regarding this album. No, it's not like anything Lloyd has done before, it's very different. Is that a bad thing? Not in my book.

Two thumbs up from me.
