The New Cobra RAD450

I was looking for a second radar detector for my other car, and I can say I have owned radar detectors from all the top manufacturers. Im not going to give a history lesson on detectors, but back in the day a Cobra Trapshooter was it. They slowly lost ground to Escort, Valentine, and Whistler, due to inferior technology. Cobra detectors have always had the ability to detect police radar and laser at great distances, but even more so in the past 10 years, they detect everything else also. Their filtering capabilities either didn't exist, or were terrible. They were still very capable of detecting police radar at excellent ranges, but the false alarms would drive you nuts. The collision avoidance systems on todays cars would set off the detector constantly, rendering it pretty much useless. So until recently with the advancement of a couple other companies technology, and Escort acquiring Cobra, your only other option was to spend $300 to $600 on a detector from pretty much 2 companies. With all that being said, this detector is nothing like any Cobra I have had. Even though Escort is keeping the Cobra name as its own entity, just as it did with Passport and Bel, the Escort technology is definitely there. I have not even touched the filtering adjustment on mine, and it gives off almost zero false alerts. The only one I have had was driving straight at an automatic door about 100ft away. The filtering is excellent. I have only had 3 true alerts so far, and the range was exceptional on 2 of the 3. The 3rd happen to be coming around a blind curve on the highway, but I bet it was still close to a mile ahead. You could see the cop as soon as you came around the curve setting in the wide open median. I really like this detector, and for its price range, you really shouldn't expect more. The only reason it got 4 stars is because when it alerts you to radar by voice, it doesn't announce the frequency it displays. It also doesn't let you set the radar frequencies so it will only display the ones that police use if it alerts you. If it alerts you due to another form of radar, it also displays its frequency. If you take the manual and memorize the ones that police use for radar and laser, your fine, if not you may be left wondering if its a police radar or not. The higher end detectors will voice alert you with the frequency, and it is filtered to the ones only law enforcement use, so there is no question it is a police officers. You just have to remember what you are still getting for this price, a great radar detector. I spoke with Cobra about the updatability with this unit. I have an excellent detector of another brand that gets updates regularly. It has internal GPS, the Cobra does not, but the updates are usually traffic cam updates. The people at Cobra say the filtering technology will be updatable on this unit. If other interference develops due to changes in automobiles or whatever, this should mean you don't have to go buy a new detector.

I had prematurely given this 5 stara but after what happened to me today , am downgrading it to 1 star. This unit has a worthless "mute" buttom on the top which easily gets engaged. When my son put the unit up, we didn't realize he accidentally pushed the mute button. Needless to say, I found out when I got pulled over. It has a volume dial on the side. Why put that stupid mute button on top to keep you from being alerted about the radar? I don't recommend this unit because of the mute button.
Great product for the price

Great product for the price. It worked well in Georiga but in Florida it seemed to not work with the State Patrols.
Didn't work when it arrived. DOA!
