I'd advise getting some decent filter papers - I prefer the 2-cup size and would avoid the supermarket-own variety. Tried them, many of them split (even after folding over the bottom edge before placing in the cone) and trust me - the resulting weak coffee + grounds in your mug is NOT worth any potential saving from cheap filters.
I've found the key to a decent cup of coffee using this method is to heat the milk (but not too much or it taints the coffee in my opinion) and to use decent ground coffee that is suitable for this method of preparation (I prefer ILLY, although of course there are others).
This cone is tough, reasonably coloured, the handle is useful and it sits on any cup/mug I've tried it on. Two small holes at the base release the coffee whilst the flared base help to retain the heat and avoid mess. The only downside for this as a means of speedy (and decentish) coffee making, is that it's made of plastic and I'm not convinced that it doesn't slightly taint the flavour, especially given the temperature of the water that passes over it.
I know that it's possible to get hold of a porcelain cone and I think that's going to be my next purchase.
Hope this has helped.
Lets go back a few steps, I was looking for a size 1 or size 2 coffee cone. Loads of size 4 ones on Amazon, '10 a penny', found this one with a model number C2. Ah, looks right I thought, lets look at some reviews. Top of the list, Most helpful review.
"Much as I like this product, it is fine for one cup of coffee. I actually wanted a filter cone for six cups and it was not clear from the wording that this was such a small cone"
That's just what I want - or so I thought. Ordered item, not too bad, £6 in total. Item arrived was a huge Size 4 cone and different handle to the item illustrated, absolutely NOT what I wanted. I contacted CKS who although polite, insisted that the item was NOT a size 2 cone and the "C2" reference was a part number. I replied that the item received had a label that had "Kaffeefilter Four" on it (It is made in Germany) They offered to refund my purchase price but not postage. Which would actually have left me out of pocket! Further reading of other reviews - after the fact I might add, and it appears that this company use one listing to sell whatever size of filter cone they have in stock. Yes, I believe they are in Breach of the Distance selling act, but I felt I had spent enough of my time sending them messages, which is probably what they hope for. So, to summarise buy from CKS at your peril, what you think you are purchasing may not be what you receive. C2 = Size4 at least in my case.
I thought it was a shame that it didnt come with a permanent filter, and yes I suppose that would save money, but would also mean washing up again!
So all in all, Very pleased with a very inexpensive ery simple piece of wonderfulness
At 10am next morning the new filter cone arrived and I enjoyed my usual giant cup of coffee over a leisurely breakfast. Well done!
For any critics out there I have used different cones over the years and always prefer them to a cafetiere or Cona system etc. This one is cheaper than the rest, and is the best, particularly with the ridges inside. Standard supermarket, Melitta or Rombout filter papers 1 X 4 fit it or you can be clever and make a filter from a sheet of kitchen paper. It makes two cups or one giant hit of caffeine in a large mug if you are like me. Disposal is simple and clean and does not mean having to wash the grounds down the sink. Remember to get a fine or medium ground coffee though, as it works on the boiling water blasting through the coffee once and taking the flavour in a few seconds with no bitterness.
