It’s not that this is a bad book - just that I feel the title is misleading. It really isn’t a book for CELTA trainees. What it is really is a book for trainers of CELTA trainees. If it was called that, I probably wouldn’t have bought it, but if I had, I would have given it four or five stars! As a book for CELTA trainees though, all it does is replicate some of the information and thinking exercises that you will be given in your input sessions. Pre-reading this before the course is of no help and it’s of no use during the course. It may serve as a useful reminder post-course, I’ll admit. ELT books are all ludicrously expensive - my advice to CELTA trainees would be to save your money for a good grammar guide (Swan’s Practical English Usage) and a good teaching English book (Scrivener?). If you have money to burn then get a good student book (like Murphy) but this will depend on the level you are teaching. If you do have money to burn though, hold onto it, as you won’t get paid much as an ELT teacher! If you are considering this book though - my advice is that the content is OK, but make sure this is really what you are looking for. I don’t particularly see how CELTA trainees who have reviewed this book say that it is “essential” - it isn’t. In my view.

Really disappointed with this book! I was meant to read it as preparation for my CELTA course, but it doesn't seem to contain any actual information at all. Instead, it has exercises for you to do and discussion points where you are supposed to come up with the information that I'd hoped this book would give - for example, it shows you an example exercise (or tells you to do one) and then asks you 'What's good about this?', or 'What's being practised here?'

It also assumes that you're in a class and are doing group activities, using this as a textbook, with a teacher taking you through it, presumably.

So it's pretty much useless for self-study. No background information, theory, or anything like that.

Had to buy it for my university course. Makes no sense whatsoever and doesn't give proper contexts or instructions. Waste of money.

This is a very good companion for anybody learning to teach English, as well as a reference book for practising teachers as it is small enough to carry around on a daily basis. This book is packed with information about teaching strategies, learning a second language, presenting grammar, professional development, planning lessons, in fact every aspect of teaching English as well as advice on written assignments for the CELTA course. I only wish I'd bought this book when I did my CELTA course! It would've put everything more into perspective. I highly recommend this book!

The book is for people who are actually attending the course. It's a long series of (more or less) interesting activities. Unfortunately those activities are not suitable for self study: if you want to make sense of the whole text you have to buy another book (the trainer's book) and get the answers to the many questions. And all ends up in a huge cost. Not worth it.

I bought this book before I started my CELTA and was hoping to use it to prepare for the course. It was useless then and it's useless now that I'm taking my CELTA. It's not really suitable for students unless they're advised to purchase it during the course, as it's one part (the trainee book) of a set of books, so there isn't any decent information in there, just vague exercises that aren't explained in any detail.

I'm not sure why it has so many positive reviews - these were what led me to buy it in the first place but it turned out to be a waste of money!

I am currently a student teacher on a CELTA course. I bought the book to aid my course. It has covered almost everything we have done in the classroom so far. It is a valuable book as it does prepare you for what to expect in the classroom. It certainly would be an advantage to purchase this book prior to commencing a CELTA course. I should say that I am disappointed it doesn't provide typical answers to the questions and it doesn't provide much information on the assignments.
