Hammer & Sickle is a single-player tactical RPG set in the spring of 1949. The player will assume the role of a top Soviet spy on clandestine duty in the British-American controlled sector of Germany during the early years of the budding Cold War.
In a world where no one is quite who they appear to be, the player is trapped in a hellish plot that could trigger a third world war, this time between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective nuclear arsenals.
Gamers will have to navigate a web of intrigue and make decisions that could determine the fate of the world.

I like the game, I like the maps, I like the story and I even like the Russian bias on the main character. Unfortunately the attempt to fuse a proper story and greater freedom onto the SS engine has been a bit of a disaster.
Far too often I had to resort to earlier saves to correct a mistake which immediately fast-forwarded the campaign to a downbeat ending. Other times I wandered around maps vainly trying to find the trigger for the next slice of plot. To be honest all I wanted was more Silent Storm/Sentinels with new skins and bigger guns. That's all there but it's been buried under the unwieldy storyline.
Ultimately what this made me do was re-install Silent Storm and play through that yet again. For the current Amazon price of a couple of quid you'd be nuts not to try it. There ARE actually guides out there that will talk you through how to play the game to get access to the greatest number of maps, but unfortunately it DOES require a guide to know who to talk to at what location and in what order, such that you don't trigger the "bad ending".
One of the most annoying things is the lack of ammo for the guns. Why would you save up $20000 for a decent sniper rifle only to have 10 bullets for it with no chance of buying or finding more ammo for it?
However , they seem to have seriously changed the difficulty of this game - an because of that I honestly haven't cared playing the game beyond it's very first mission.....
When installing the game on my relatively high-end PC it also took very long time , it took x minutes before the autorun appeared on screen , then it took very long time installing the gigabytes of space that the games occupies..
Anyway , all that really doesn't matter because the game can not run on Windows 7 as is and there is no longer any support for it.
When trying to run the game on Windows 7 it will ask if one wants to install the security thing (Starforce) that ought to enable one to actually run the game , and if one says yes to that with subsequent reboot then one is severly punished for that because that will make Windows not be able to run unless it fixes itself by reverting to a previous restore point (if one available) (The Starforce security drivers are incompatable with Winwows 7) . And to fix that problem and be able to start the game that one just bought on DVD then one have to find a No-CD crack on the internet (if one can find one with no virus) and install that to bypass the Starforce security on the game.
When one then can finally start the game then this game has one very annoying bug: On newer systems with >= 4GB of RAM and a recent NVidia Video Card, it will not start up, but instead display the message "Unsupported Video Card" , so in that case then one have to open SICKLE.EXE with a HEX editor at offset 0x1cba (dec 7354) and change 0x74 to 0xeb (info from Johannes Bauer) , because otherwise the game gives the "Unsupported Video Card" error mesasage .
So all in all I really can NOT recommend this game to anyone other than extremely die hard fans of the game series...
Saying that the game was made by Nival, is enough to say about graphics. Why? Show me one game which was made by Nival and wasn't graphically advanced in it's genre. Game full of nice effects; dynamic lightning. Shadows are quite good, they way better than HL2 ones. Physics is quite realistic. But all of this is hiding in a shadow of Nival's great destruction engine. I will say one thing, in this game you can destroy absolutely everything!!! The stunning thing is that you were able to see the work of this beauty 4 years ago in Silent Storm.
An absolutely stunning engine with great effects and graphics.
Features every possible weapon from the pre-cold war era.
So many different options, such as 4 different ways of shooting a sniper, or shooting through a wall, etc.
And yes i have played the full game. I would recommend this to any gamer and especially fans of the genre.
