In short, I'm very happy with my purchase... almost 5 stars.
This is my Review:
I have waited a while to give this tablet a full everyday typical usage before reviewing it, and here is my honest opinion.
The Tablet is slim and very light.
The screen quality is impressive.
HD Video play back is really good, no lag or crashes etc.
Plays all files that I throw at it.
YouTube and BBC i Player is awesome on this device!
WiFi signal is very strong.
Sound quality is really good from the single speaker.
On the downside:
The screen can be very in accurate at times, touching the screen in one area and the tablet detects it on another section? (any help on how to fix this please?)
The device can be very sluggish to react to wake up from standby, sometimes its unresponsive.
The device was already on when received?
The supplied screen protector is the wrong way round for this model.
Device isn't detected in Google-play, have to use [...] to download most of the android market place apps.
Received with a slight chip/crack in the rear case of the tablet?
To sum up this product, its very good for the price you are paying.
I would recommend this device to someone who wants to get into Android tablet devices, its perfect for watching films and YouTube.
We first got him a "Dual Camera 7" inch A13 Allwinner 1Ghz CPU 512 MB RAM Android Tablet PC (White)" (around £30-£35) and found the screen to be dull and the performance very sluggish!! However as my son is very young, he did not really care about the performance and was happy to play it.
Then, last week, he hid the tablet under a rug and I stepped on it cracking the screen! Seeing how much it costs to replace the screen, it made more sense in buying him a new tablet.
After looking at what seemed like dozens of different tablets costing between £25-£55, they all seemed to be the same. The "8GB CAMBRIDGE SCIENCES StarPAD 2" seemed like the best of the bunch after reading the reviews so I took the plunge and purchased one hoping it would be much better than the "Allwinner" tablet.
After 10 seconds of using it and could see right away that the performance was so much smoother and quicker and the display was fantastic compared to the "Allwinner"!! This is an absolute bargain!!!!
That was my initial impression and after an hour it has not changed!!!
***Ok, after further use I found the battery life is pretty poor, so I'm now giving this tablet 4 stars rather than 5!! Still an excellent tablet though!!***
This is the cheap tablet that you are looking for!!!!!!
There are a number of pre-installed applications such as Skype, BBC iPlayer, facebook, Twitter, etc.
The tablet runs Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 and is quad-core.
There is an expansion slot for a micro-SD card to increase memory capacity. It has forward and reverse cameras. It is quite slim. All control is through the use of soft buttons as they appear on the screen, apart from volume which has a separate rocker-switch control on the side of the tablet, though there are also soft buttons to increase/decrease volume, and the on/off switch.
Apart from wi-fi and cable, the tablet also has Bluetooth for additional connectivity, which I think is a nice feature.
I have loaded a number of applications on to it from the Google Play store and they all work well.
This is the third Android 7" tablet that I have purchased and first impressions are favourable. It was bought as a replacement for a PiPo which after a couple of day's use refused to work again. The other tablet, a MoMo, has a nasty habit of freezing and it can be difficult to get it restarted. The Cambridge sciences has displayed none of these problems.
The tablet looks very attractive and is lightweight, The screen is OK. The main issue I had was that the touch screen was unusable during initial charging due to numerous spurious touches when I moved my finger anywhere near the screen. Once past the initial charge I could recharge and still use the touch screen. Swapping to a Blackberry charger made the problem go away so I suspect it is primarily down to poor charger design.
I tried to find USB drivers on the supplier's website so that I could use with the Android development environment but there is nothing there. The solution was to download the standard Google Nexus drivers and edit the VID and PID in the INF file to match the Cambridge Sciences tablet. Once you know how, this takes about 2 or 3 minutes so I am surprised that this information is not on the supplier's website.
In conclusion, this is a reasonable for value for money tablet for occasional casual use. If you are expecting a Kindle Fire or Google Nexus quality of device you will be disappointed but for less than half the price, this isn't a bad buy.
