Where do I start ... I loved the other books in the Second Chance series but I have to say this one really sticks out above the rest for me! I'm sure Kemmie thinks I'm a stalker I must have emailed her about 3 times during reading this book. Kemmie really took me by surprise in this book ... she threw things at me that took caught me off guard.

Callen is a troubled and surrounded by darkness, can his Nightingale save him from destroying his future and throwing him in to the pits of darkness? I absolutely LOVE Quinn in this novel she is feisty, determined and prime example of how all of us females should be. We can have moments of weakness and feel lost but WE should NEVER forget who we are! A fantastic character in this book.

I love the way Kemmie has tied this book in with the others! The characters just slot in to each others lives. With each book I read of Kemmies I feel her writing style grows so much .... I can see how much blood sweat and tears must have gone in to this book but it seriously paid off! Kemmie's writing leaves no stone unturned. Just the right amount of heat, drama and lust. I read this book in one sitting whilst on a night shift and she has blown me away, I felt destroyed knowing the loss of eternal brotherhood but empowered at the same time. I'm not going to say any more else I'll give it all away but this is a one click, and although you don't need to have read the other books it is recommended just so you feel the other characters more.

Kemmie NEVER give up you are unique your writing captures the imaginations of so many!

This series just gets better and better.
It's filled with raw emotion and so much angst that you can't put it down. I was sucked in from beginning to end. The story flowed impeccably, as all of Kemmie's books do.
I love all of the characters and I can't wait to read Shelby's story.

**I received an ARC for an honest review.**

This book fell short for me there seemed to be a lot of things going on and I never felt a connection with the storyline or the characters.

I loved Ledger but I just could not finish Mason and Callen was tough for me to connect with. I liked who he was a person and soldier but all of his conflicted emotions were hard for me to connect with. Same goes for Quinn. I just could not get a grasp on her. I also just never got that spark between the two either.

The story could have been better but the flow of everything was just off for me. I hate writing this but it is my honest opinion.

Callen is my favorite of the Second Chances series. I feel that Kemmie Michaels really refined her writing in this newest novel of hers. I loved the message that Kemmie provides readers as well as being able to enjoy characters that are more easy to relate to. Callen is about acceptance. That is what stood out most to me. Part of Callen deals with acceptance of losing someone as well as being accepting of a person we care about.

Callen was introduced in the novel Mason. Now we get to read about his heartbreaking story. Callen starts the story off with him working at a local prison as a contractor to improve efficiency in the system. There he meets a prison psychologist that turns his life upside down. Little does she know that Callen has motivation and plans for which she is a part of. He is bound for revenge and this lovely lady holds a part of his mission. This begs the question of how much is revenge worth? Is it worth risking love or living alone forever?

I liked the characters much better in Callen. For me, I was able to relate more easily to Callen and the heroine. We still get to see characters from previous books, but their role is played more in supporting Callen's character. Shelby is the character I am extremely interested in reading more about. I am going to let you read about why, but I think you will be saddened just as much as I am by her role that she played in Callen. i suggest that you read previous book before reading Callen. That will help you understand how the other characters came to be. Having read up to Callen, I understood more of the plot as well as how each character interacted with each other.

I give Callen a solid 4 star rating. I really feel that Kemmie's writing improved in this book as well as the characters were just more easy to get to know better. I don't think that I will ever understand and like Mason, but Callen made up for it in this novel.

Favorite Quotes:

“I swear I’m strategizing this dinner with the level of planning I employed to overthrow an African warlord.”

“I have been away from myself for far too long.”

“I am near weeping at the sensation of bringing my body and my mind in sync more powerfully than ever. I never imagined love could be this amazing.”

“I’m not certain which makes more noise: my heart falling from the height he took me, or the sound of Callen falling off the pedestal I’d constructed for him. Maybe the tears threatening to choke me would be louder.”

“Part of me wants to fast-forward a year to find out how all this will work out.”

My Review:

I can boldly declare that I have spent my week with Kemmie Michaels and 791 pages of her sexy men. Ledger is my favorite as he is a sweet, tender, loving protector. Then came Mason, who was is smart, yet brash and impulsive, but out for justice and wanting to do the right thing. And ending with Callen who is grieving and out for vengeance and revenge, and finds betrayal. Callen’s story is the heaviest read of the three as it is flavored with melancholy and regret. All three of these stories are based on an obsession and heightened sense of duty and justice. They do what some might consider awful acts, but do so for a good reason and a big heart. This has been my first Kemmie experience and I found all three books to be well-written, insightful, entertaining, and deliciously steamy. With her tactical knowledge, I believe I would be afraid to be on her bad side if I happened to live nearby. I am anxious to see what happens in the next book.

Callen Reed is focused on revenge. He has lost the woman he loves before they even had a chance to explore what their life could have been. Using his Special Forces training to good use he devises a plan that will satisfy his need to avenge her death. His entire focus is on this one mission with all other things swept to the side. Relying on his own skills, and calling on Shelby occasionally, Callen has tunnel-vision on his task. How Quinn Porter penetrated his defenses is a testament that love is as unexpected as everything else in life. Quinn is a psychologist and is too perceptive for his comfort level. She sees things she is not supposed to. He is determined to follow through despite any possible consequences. Will he miss out a new opportunity for love?

I thought nothing could top the gut-wrenching emotion of Mason and Dig’s story but I was quickly proved wrong. Callen’s thirst for revenge was all-consuming and his focus was deadly – nothing was going to stand in his way. Quinn was an unexpected spanner in the works and he really didn’t need this complication. And he also didn’t know how to deal with it as his path was already plotted out – and love was not part of the equation. Love, betrayal and revenge are the stars in this novel and they shine ever so brightly. There will be another story to come which will give us Shelby’s story. I hope there is a happy ending for Shelby – she deserves one too!

HASH(0x94b9221c) out of 5 stars Great Story and series 28 May 2015

This is another great book in this wonderful series. It is full of drama, humor, suspense and romance. Callen is such a damaged man who is consumed with the need for revenge. All he wants is to kill the men responsible for the murder of Evvie. He is set on this course and found himself unwillingly attracted to Quinn, a woman who can see the real him. Quinn sees evil all the time, being a prison psychologist, and she sees the Callen is not all he appears to be and she is hesitant to dig too deep but can't seem to help herself. Callen and Quinn's relationship slowly builds but there are many obstacles in their path that could tear the burgeoning romance apart.
I tried to read this book without reading the first two books in the series and HIGHLY recommend readers do not! To really enjoy and understand this story, you NEED to read Ledger and Mason. Thankfully I did have those two stories so I stopped reading this and as soon as I read them, this book made so much more sense. This is a third part of literally one long continuous storyline, though each book features and different character. Well written and an emotional roller coaster ride from the first page to the last page. An awesome 5 star book!
