A fantastic biography of one of the great men of British missionary work, written sensitively by someone who knew him (his son-in-law, although this doesn't become obvious until almost the end of the book). CT Studd was an amazing man of faith, giving up his potential as an international crickter, and instead working tirelessly for God in China, India and Africa, through many pains and difficulties, and establishing WEC. Could not recommend this more highly.
Some want to live within the sound of church or chapel bell; I want to run a rescue shop within a yard of hell8 January 2009
The story of the man who was an England cricketer and was then called by God to go as a missionary to Africa, founding what is now known as WEC, the Wordwide Evangelization Crusade. Studd is well known for his dictum "Some want to live within the sound of church or chapel bell; I want to run a rescue shop within a yard of hell."

True Discipleship - A must read for following Christ

Reading about CT has been such a breath of fresh air and example of true devotion to Christ. I read it to my kids at night before bed and his journals always spark edifying conversations. The fact that he was a popular sportsman helped my kids connect with him and his sacrifice to give everything to the cause of Christ. This is a must read, especially in a day when being a Christian has grown a bit confusing for most.

The Cricketer & Pioneer sets off telling the story how how C.T. Studd was possibly one of the greatest players ever of the game Cricket. Since I am not familiar with the game of Cricket, it seemed quite trivial to me. It helped me place into perspective today's sports heroes. The rest of the book walks with C.T. through the mission field in China and Africa. The book is not what one would call an "easy read", the language is a bit antiquated and unfamiliar, but that is a part of the charm of the book. My favorite quote from the book was, "Christ wants not nibblers of the possible, but grabbers of the impossible."

Real heroism: a gripping, easy-reading modern chapter of the Acts of the Apostles

Uplifting, encouraging, funny and exciting! This is my second reading and it is a wonderful blessing every day. The author, Norman Grubb, and the subject, C.T. Studd, are inspiring men who led amazing lives of heroic action for Christ and saving men, women and children from Hell.

This truly Is one of the best ever missionary biographies. The story of CT Studd is inspiring, convicting, edifying and faith filled. If you don't want any of these things in your life, don't read this book. I keep going back and reading the things that I highlighted and keep getting inspired and challenged. I personally have bought over a dozen copies to give to others with a heart for missions.
