Given the Byzantium Empire is something of a blind spot in historical knowledge for many, this brief and easy-to-read history proved to be a good quick introduction. I regret not reading it before my first trip to Istanbul where the place is literally, in parts, littered with fragments of its Byzantium Age.

Unfortunately I cannot comment on its merits in terms of research and accuracy given the "blind spot" mentioned earlier but it seemed thorough.

Well written and enjoyable and not as dull as John Julius Norwich's version. A good starting place to start reading about this fascinating empire.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a pleasure to read 26 Sept. 2010

This well written book of only 148 pages by Giles Morgan gave me a good insight in the history of the Byzantine

Empire. It was for me really an eye-opener. The book is very concise and full of details. It is amazing that in such

a small book that you can read so many details about historical personages. Many emperors were totally unknown for

me, but now I have a better idea concerning this interesting and important period of our history.

3.0 out of 5 stars Byzantium: Capital of an Ancient Empire 13 Nov. 2012
By William Bastian - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Delt too much with facts and figures, rather than telling an interesting story, which this city surely was, but I made it to the end.
