I bought this book along with the magnolia bakery book, and have not used any other cook book since. The recipes are old-fashioned and over the top(just the way they should be) and of course typically American.
And the fact that the book is American brings me to my one and only criticism of the book, all the recipes are in cup measurements, which could be problem if you live outside the USA or if you don't own a set of measuring cups(which i bought because of this book).
But don't let the only downside discourage you from buying one of the best baking books around. The wording of the book is short and sweet, the recipes are simple and easy to follow and the results really are worth the time and somewhat minimal effort you put in. (i've tried 6 recipes and the results have been perfect every time).
I would strongly recommend you buy this book(or go to the actual bakery, as I intend to, one day).

So far so good. I have made 3 of the recipes in this book and all have turned out well. A few of the recipes look pretty ambitious but are outlined pretty simply. They are old fashioned cakes and pies with old fashioned ingredients. Just a note though, do make sure you have some cup measurements and measuring spoons as all the recipes use these as measurements. Only criticism is that I wish there were more recipes.
Overall a really good book that you will find yourself going back to again and again.

SO.. I have allways loved the buttercups bake shop.. but I really wanted to eat whatever it is on the cover of this book. I allways find it really dissappointing when there is a pretty picture on the cover but no recipe to follow the picture. I find it misleading.

For anyone who bought this for the pretty cupcakes on the cover.. think again.. look for another.. Though it does have the recipe for red velvet frosting.. Nothing on how to make buttercream :(...

All in all its not what I was looking for.. I will buy the others in search of that cupcake recipe.

I purchased this book over the weekend and was slightly dissapointed. Firstly as it's an american cookbook the measurments are in cup measures so if like me you don't have a cup measure don't use your mug you have your tea as this definately will not work.

My real dissapointment was that there is only ONE photo in the entire book. The only tasty think about this book is it's cover. The receipes themselves don't sound too inviting.

Personally if like me you like to see a picture of what your end result should look like (Not that mine ever look as perfected as in the picture's) then this book is not for you and definately not for me!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 18 July 2016

Not a cupcake book at all so I am not sure why cupcakes are on the cover other than to take advantage of what the store is best known for. I know it's a book of old-fashioned recipes but most of these recipes are so common that you can find them with any internet search. For example, there is a recipe for Rice Krispy treats which is the same recipe as on the bag of marshmallows. I was disappointed with the book but maybe a novice baker would like it.
4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome recipes but beware the red velvet icing! 14 Jan. 2013

I've owned this book for at least 6 years now and everything I have made from this cookbook gets rave reviews--especially those darn cupcakes! Hardy anyone bakes from scratch these days so making something out of this book will really set you apart. People who say they can't tell the difference between storebought mixes and icings and homemade are either lying or lacking taste buds.

The only item that I made that has been disappointing so far was the red velvet cake icing. WAY too much butter in there, it tasted like butter and was inedible. I have since supplanted it with a recipe I found that calls for using 12oz white chocolate chips in the icing, cream cheese, 2 sticks of butter, and confectioner's sugar to thicken a bit, and it has made all the difference.

Happy baking!

2.0 out of 5 stars Bought for my collection based on the cover .... 13 Dec. 2011

...turns out the cover was the best part. The cookbook looks great displayed - but I made several recipes and all results were incredibly average. I bake A LOT - not a novice, and there is nothing special here. Pretty to look at .... ends there.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book never fails me 28 May 2003

I was somewhat skeptical when I first purchased this book. I'm an amateur, "weekend" baker and for some reason I thought that these recipes would be difficult. I was so happy to find out that not only are they relatively easy, they are absolutely delicious. I've made almost everything from this book and nothing has failed me. Now this is my "go-to" dessert book. I made the carrot cake this past weekend (I've never made carrot cake before) and it was wonderful. All of the cakes I've made have turned out moist and just like my grandma used to make. I highly recommend this book if you're looking for some good old-fashioned desserts that aren't too difficult to make.
4.0 out of 5 stars Tasty, comforting treats 19 April 2011

I've been very happy with everything I've made from this book. I love the cookies and the banana pudding is amazing! There are amazingly satisfying recipes in this book. I'll be making things out of Buttercup for years to come. Others have compared it to the Magnolia cookbooks (The Magnolia Bakery Cookbook: Old Fashioned Recipes From New Yorks Sweetest Bakery and More From Magnolia: Recipes from the World Famous Bakery and Allysa Torey's Home Kitchen). I don't see any reason to not have them all, though.
