Review

'… excellent …'. Neil Paterson, The Bookseller

'This is a monument to clarity and clear thinking: a master class in what is fast becoming a lost art … no printer should be without this book. No publisher. No editor and certainly no self-publisher.' Writer's Forum

'It is described as a handbook for editors, copy-editors and proofreaders, and it ought to be in the reference section of your public library. It is one book I never lend.' Writers Forum

The most recent edition of Judith Butcher's handbook really is indispensable for anyone who is seriously involved in the business of editing. It is less discursive and rather more didactic than the Chicago Manual but its scope is broad and its reasoning is always clear. There is a very useful and succinct section on editing on-screen.

For editors and proofreaders - this is a fabulous resource. I use it alongside a number of style guides, and this is one I refer to often.

This is every bit as good as the previous edition with the bonus of the revised and updated content on digital editing and software. It's not something I use every day, it's a reference title after all, but if I have a style query, it's the first place I check - and usually find the answer really quickly. I wouldn't be without a copy of the Handbook - it's invaluable!

The most useful book for a copyeditor! My business probably wouldn't be as good without Judith Butcher's occasional guidance.

Copy editing wasn't too high on my list when I came to Falmouth University to do a Masters degree in Professional Writing. The more I got involved with the editing side of things though, the more I began to see the opportunities, and this book is proving very useful in helping me to master the art.

The writing style for this book is quite old-fashioned. I found myself reading some sentences two or three times. For example, I had trouble understanding who uses which colour ink on a proof copy. It shouldn't be that complicated. Shorter sentences would probably help. Diagrams showing the various stages of book publication would be helpful for those who are new to the publishing.
I think the book could be written in a more up-to-date, accessible style without being dumbed down. It contains valuable information, but it takes some effort to plough through text.
