Product Description

Product Description

A double bill of classic silent comedy. 'Our Hospitality' (1923) sees Buster Keaton as the last surviving member of the McCoy family, sending up the famous Hatfield-McCoy feud. Trouble is inevitable when he falls in love with a Hatfield (Natalie Talmadge, his real-life girlfriend). The film also features train and chase sequences, as well as the famous rescue atop a high waterfall. In 'Sherlock Junior' (1923) Keaton plays a projectionist who, accused of stealing a watch, dreams of becoming a detective and clearing his name. His thoughts are so powerful that he dreams himself right onto the screen, merging with the characters in the movies he shows.

Our Hospitality and Sherlock Jr are two Buster Keaton classics, but they are not presented to their best advantage by this "Signature" DVD. The DVD has no extras and not even a menu so you cannot get to the second film, Sherlock Jr without scrolling through the first - it doesn't even start at a chapter point. However, as there doesn't appear to be another DVD version of Sherlock Jr, it's worth it to get to this masterpiece - both a comic delight and a film which demonstrates an assured handling of film langauage. Keaton's character is a projectionist who is also training to be a detective. When he's framed for stealing a watch, and spurned by his girlfriend, Keaton daydreams that he is a famous detective solving a similar case in one of the films he's projecting. Keaton physically jumps into the film and there follows a series of cuts in which his character can't keep up with the changing locations, sitting down on a bench, only to be nearly run over in the cut to the next street shot. The first film, Our Hospitality, should not be missed for the surreal train journey and Keaton's stunts.

Perfect films! Buster is superb. I was worried that the quality of the film wouldn't be good but it is good. I didn't find the lack of a menu too annoying. This seems to be the only copy of Sherlock Jr. I'd strongly recommend it.

This film is quite interesting in many regards. Despite it is silent, the expression does not suffer, it tells much about a period that is long gone (the movie is from the '20s but it tells a story that is supposed to happen in the the '80s of the XIX century. Great acting from Buster Keaton and story, even some suspance, emotional and moving
