This book left me feeling quite ambivalent towards it and the author.

James Watt is a man full of certainties. In fact, if you don't do things the James Watt way you are a fool, imbecile, idiot, stupid muppet, clown or moron - and those are just the polite words he uses. If you don't do things the James Watt way and you happen to work for a large company and wear a suit you are a 'corporate android'. No ifs and buts, that's just how things are.

Aside from the know-it-all arrogance - he quotes famous people like Winston Churchill, George Bernard Shaw and Kurt Cobain, but quotes himself at the end of each chapter in larger, white on black characters - there are also a number of contradictions in the book.

For instance, he tells you right at the beginning to forget about business plans and calls an acquaintance of his who worked for too long on his plan a 'number crunching clown'. Later in the book, whilst discussing financial controls, he goes to great lengths to extol the virtues of being a number crunching clown. He dislikes corporate androids, but his description of Brewdog's recruitment process appears to amount to a search for several hundred James Watt clones; a breed of super-andriods, it seemed to me. Furthermore his dislike of all things corporate does not exclude running KPI's on absolutely everything that can be measured. Finally, he screams at his audience to always be the authentic you, then uses American spellings throughout, as well as the inevitable kick-donkey expression.

In short, he is way more corporate than he wants to admit. If there was no such thing as an MBA he would have invented it by now.

That said, it occurs to me that this is a great read for somebody starting out in business.

What a fantastic book!

It clearly states the basic principles of business in a way that is both easy to follow and even apply to any business!

I loved the section on accounts / finance and how important it is to understand your finances! Don't hire someone learn it for yourself.

Would love to find more books like this!

What a good book.
I bought it for myself, enjoyed it, and then bought a few for my team at work.
I like the way he takes boring (but important matters) and puts them into context with some practical approaches and real life examples.
Nice big print, easy to read, and one of the most enjoyable business books I have read.
Would definitely recommend.

To give a little background I started my own business in 2012 after 20 years working for someone else and whilst I always excelled at whatever job I was doing I never really fitted in well with a lot of companies.

After reading a lot of business books and having some excellent coaching, I soon realised that most people really don't like change, they like things to stay the way they are and for someone like me who likes to challenge everything this was very frustrating.

The answer "we do thing this way as that's how we have always done them" is the ultimate expression of middle management in companies not knowing why we do things in a certain way, but not wanting to be singled out as a trouble maker just accepting it and not questioning why. Personally I couldn't imagine anything worse and it's certainly not the way companies ensure long term success and happy employees.

For those who know anything about Punk music you will be aware that it was never about brightly coloured spikey hair and safety pins through the nose, that's what happened to it when the general public got their hands on it. Punk was about challenging the way things were done and trying something different, even if you knew you didn't have the skills or talent at the time to be very good.

It was also about saying I don't care what people think, I don't care if I fail because at least I will have tried and not just stuck to doing things the way they have always been done.

It's so full of metaphors, if I read once that cash flow is king then I read it 100 times. A bit of the book was usuful, for the best part of it I felt like it had already been covered. I love brewdog and was expecting more but it wasn't to be, nice end to the book. 2 amazing guys with a fantastic story, would be interesting to read more about their brewing and history.
