Review

One of the few academics to combine the theories of economics with practical business management insights. (The Guardian)

Mr Kay has a gift, rare among academic economists, for explaining how economics can be put to practical use. (The Economist)

Essential reading for any human resources manager who is concerned about the future of the profession. John Kay has written an enjoyable and accessible analysis of business strategy ... Absorbing the lessons from this book makes a good starting point for finding an answer. (People Management)

This latest book of readings provides a host of further examples of the relevant economist at the height of his powers. I strongly recommend it to those in the business/financial community or wider public who wish to be persuaded that an economist can have something of interest and value to offer, and also to academic economists as example of ready accessibility combined with relevance and technical validity. (The Glasgow Herald)

The book is written in a clear and accessible style and has wide appeal, in particular to those from other disciplines who are intrigued by the business world and want to know more about how it operates ... this is a sparkling, well-argued book. (Times Higher Education Supplement)

The book is written in a clear and accessible style and has wide appeal, in particular to those from other disciplines who are intrigued by the business world and want to know more about how it operates ... a sparkling, well-argued book. (Paul Ormerod, The Times Higher)

Combines common sense and rigorous economic thinking in a number of essays on business and economic issues ... A readable and rigorous analysis that will become increasingly important as we move into a knowledge/learning economy. (Long Range Planning, vol.30, June 1997)

it allows the interested reader to gain new insights into the links between economic analysis, strategy and corporate success. Its fresh and vivid blend of theory and case studies make this book a recommendable and instructive read. (The Business Economist, vol.28, no.2)

Wide-ranging essays by top Oxford academic. (Financial Times)

From the Back Cover

Kay's overall purpose is to show that economics can and should be brought to the analysis of business problems. In doing so he distinguishes his approach from that of the forecasters and the formula-bound, and those on the other hand who suggest abandoning economics in our postmodern complex world.

Format: Hardcover
This article's collection book makes you question the usefullness of business forecast modelling. It goes against the idea that economics is just about forecasting scenarios, showing that it should/could be used for assessing competitive advantage of corporations and countries. Although those are the main topics of the book, other issues are covered which gives the reader a critical, broad and different vision of economics.
