Ever wonder what it is that makes two people click or clash? Or why some groups excel while others fumble? Or how you, as a leader, can make or break team potential?
Business Chemistry holds the answers. Business Chemistry will help you grasp where others are coming from, appreciate the value they bring, and determine what they need in order to excel. It offers practical ways to be more effective as an individual and as a leader.
Imagine you had a more in-depth understanding of yourself and why you thrive in some work environments and flounder in others. Suppose you had a clearer view on what to do about it so that you could always perform at your best.
Imagine you had more insight into what makes people tick and what ticks them off, how some interactions unlock potential while others shut people down. Suppose you could gain people’s trust, influence them, motivate them, and get the very most out of your work relationships.

Suppose you could activate the potential benefits of diversity on your teams and in your organizations, improving collaboration to achieve the group’s collective potential.

From the Inside Flap
Have you ever struggled to communicate with someone who spoke a different language? Did you perhaps end up raising your voice, hoping to make yourself understood? Chances are it didn't help get your point across. It's the same with working styles. When faced with someone who's different, turning up the volume on what's most comfortable for you won't get you very far. Worse, if you're dealing with a whole team of people, the problems with that approach are amplified. Business Chemistry®: Practical Magic for Crafting Powerful Work Relationships offers a better way.
Drawing upon extensive research and thousands of interactions with executives in the Deloitte Greenhouse™, Kim Christfort and Suzanne Vickberg show you how to create the kind of chemistry that fuels success by engaging with others on their own terms. They explore how to simultaneously meet the needs of distinct working styles in order to harness the power of diverse perspectives. And they share learnings from leaders and their teams across industries and all over the world who have put Business Chemistry to work for themselves. Now you can do the same.
A refreshing departure from the typical business read, Business Chemistry is full of colorful descriptions, evocative stories, intriguing data, and practical strategies. It offers concrete guidance on bringing out the best in people with varied strengths who excel in different contexts Pioneers who value possibilities and spark energy and imagination, Guardians who value stability and bring order and rigor, Drivers who value challenge and generate momentum, and Integrators who value connection and draw teams together.
Whether your goal is to raise your own level of performance, enhance customer engagement, or become a more effective leader, this resource provides what you need to:
- Build empathy and stronger relationships by recognizing key differences in how people work and what they need to thrive, then flexing your own style accordingly
- Manage and motivate different types of people by learning what kinds of interactions and working conditions kill their potential, and what kinds unlock it
- Activate the power of diversity and lead teams to success by revamping norms and ways of working so all can perform at their best
By fostering a deep understanding of diverse working styles and perspectives, Business Chemistry serves as a practical guide for creating relationships, team environments, and organizational cultures that elevate the individual and collective performance of everyone.

About the authors

I've dedicated my career to understanding and fostering the conditions necessary to spark innovation, spur alignment, and create lasting impact. Recognizing that companies are often held back not by technical challenges, but human ones, I've focused my work on helping executives and their teams mitigate or dissolve those barriers to progress through thoughtfully crafted experiences.
In my role as the leader of Deloitte Greenhouse Experiences, my team and I advance the “science of experiential engagement”, and apply these insights with hundreds of companies every year – diagnosing why groups get stuck, crafting methods that unlock opportunities, and facilitating immersive, interactive sessions that accelerate breakthroughs.
These breakthroughs are typically engineered within five physical environments – permanent Deloitte Greenhouse spaces custom-designed to break teams away from “business as usual” with low and high tech elements geared to promote positive change for senior executive teams grappling with adaptive challenges ranging from emerging marketplace disruption to organizational transformations.
I am also the architect and global leader of Deloitte’s proprietary working style system Business Chemistry®, used by more than 200,000 people around the world, co-author of the March/April 2017 Harvard Business Review cover story on Business Chemistry and of the book “Business Chemistry: Practical Magic for Crafting Powerful Work Relationships” coming out May 2018. I am a frequent speaker, facilitator and coach for global businesses.
Before taking on my current role, I spent twelve years in Deloitte Consulting Strategy and Operations specializing in customer and market strategy, and customer experience. Prior to that, I worked in Public Relations and Marketing at The Benjamin Group Inc. I have an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and a BA in Science, Technology, and Society from Pomona College.

I'm a social-personality psychologist, author, coach, and the chief researcher for the Deloitte Greenhouse. I’m intrigued by the many ways we can integrate empathy and creative problem-solving into our work, our lives, and our relationships. These are my favorite topics to think, talk, and write about.
In my current role at Deloitte, I guide leaders and teams to explore how their work is shaped by the mix of individuals making up the team and I coach them in creating cultures in which each member can thrive, contribute at their highest level, get creative together, and get more of what they want from work and life. I'm the primary author of the Business Chemistry Blog and I’ve co-authored two books with my Deloitte colleague Kim Christfort. Most recently we released The Breakthrough Manifesto: 10 Principles to Spark Transformative Innovation. Previously we released Business Chemistry: Practical Magic for Crafting Powerful Work Relationships.
I also recently released a more personal book—Divorce by Design: What If Staying or Leaving Aren't Your Only Options?— about challenging the default, conventional solutions to an unhappy marriage, and applying design thinking to create a divorce that's better than the norm. In it, I tell my story, with its ups and downs—the happy, hard, and humorous times. I also share my expertise in creative problem-solving and offer practical advice for readers who want a third option, one that's better than staying miserably married or tearing their family apart.
Prior to joining Deloitte, I worked at the Great Place to Work Institute, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Along the way, I've earned a PhD in social-personality psychology from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, as well as an MBA from the Stern School of Business at New York University. I am a trained professional coach, certified by the International Coaching Federation and the Coactive Training Institute.
While I live in New Jersey now, I have strong Minnesota roots. When I can get to the woods, mountains, or a lake, those are my happy places. I'm an unapologetic introvert, so if I'm not out in nature, I'm probably on my sofa with my books, my space heater, and my dog, Lucy. Of course I sometimes venture into the world of other humans, to do something fun with my kids, hang out with friends, or volunteer in my community. Those moments bring me joy. So does arriving back home.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 December 2020Being fascinated about human interactions, this looked to be right up my street. It is... and I throughly recommend this book (and the assessment!) to everybody.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 July 2021Easy read, lots of practical tips to apply in the real world. Thoroughly enjoyed
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 February 2020This book has nothing original. It mainly consists of theories that are already known and banal examples. The basic assumption seems to be that human beings can be classified into very simple categories & knowing about these categories would work magic. The initial chapters are nothing new but tolerable. In later chapter the authors try to touch upon the complexities of human nature but fail miserably. Then they resort to analysing each-other’s personalities as if the whole world is about them. Anybody with basic knowledge of statistics would be able to question the quality of their data models & conclusions. On top of this the printed version of the book smelt strongly of paint.

This interesting and entertaining book argues very well that there is no "better" personality type for business. All have advantages and disadvantages. And a team with different strengths and talents has greater potential than one where everyone is similar. But those personality differences can derail, as well as enhance, a team's performance (most often it is the former). So understanding your own and your associates' personalities and preferences can make huge improvements in job satisfaction and effectiveness.
Because different people think and respond in different ways, the authors maintain that the golden rule of business chemistry is not to treat others as YOU would like to be treated, but as THE OTHERS would like to be treated.
Lots of specific suggestions, and excellent examples. An interesting wrinkle is that the two authors are of opposite personality types, and you can see in their interactions the advantages and stresses those differences cause.

Business Chemistry isn't just for work. I find myself using it with my family, in social occasions, and in other areas that demand empathy.. This book dives into the one thing we've often wondered, "Why can't I get through to this person?" By understanding how others think and what they need to contribute to success, it provides a wealth of knowledge if you put it into practice. My absolute favorite sections are the "___ in hell." I just wanted to print my type off, highlight the major points, and send it to those that make me bang my head against the wall (ahem... mother...). This book isn't just a good perspective, it is the key to the kingdom of success!
