"It is vital that business analysts adopt a leadership role and this book will provide a valuable resource to enable them to do so." (Debra Paul, co-author of "Business Analysis" and "Business Analysis Techniques")

"I can't recommend this book highly enough. It should appeal to anyone working in the project/programme space. For business analysts ready for the leadership challenge, it should be considered required reading." (Dean Burnell MBCS, Chartered Institute for IT)

It was going to be a looooong flight to London from New Zealand, so I reserved a reading treat: "Business Analysis and Leadership: Influencing change" edited by Penny Pullan and James Archer.

If you don't know these two, then what about Susan or James Robertson, Emma Langman, Adrian Reid, Joseph da Silva, and others? Kick off some self leadership and go discover the great insights shared by experienced practitioners of the business analysis art.

And don't ya just love it when you're right - this book did turn out to be an excellent read.

The book's first section (and continuing throughout) forces reflection. If you're reading it you have no choice but to reflect. If that doesn't happen to you I'd question your reading focus. It certainly challenged me to challenge myself on my approach to things, yet gave encouragement for the challenge as the advice is practical and you know it's a journey the authors have personally travelled and therefore, is possible.

War stories are in there but they don't over power, and humour comes through as well. Also the sharing of some great quotes e.g. "metamorphosis may beget a cockroach"... for context, you'll need to read the book.

The book is split into parts with Leadership of Self setting the groundwork for Leadership within a Project, Leadership within an Organisation, and Leadership in the Wider World.

Then there are real opinion pieces in each of these sections where I felt inclined to have a one sided "discussion" with the author, and know I could have a two way discussion if I wanted as this book is well supported by websites including [...] LinkedIn groups, plus many of the authors put their contact details in the book too. These people really do want to share knowledge.

Highly recommended for all Business Analysts. As the Business Analysis profession develops, there is an increasing demand for good leadership, whether that's leading a team or setting direction for yourself or a project. If you're a Business Analyst in or moving toward a leadership role, this book is a great introduction and packed with value. I like the short, concise chapters (great for someone with my attention span and fear of academic texts) and the range of topics covered. It also gives an honest and practical perspective from people working in the industry.

It doesn't matter whether you are a seasoned business analyst or a novice. If you are serious about change, if advancing our profession is of importance to you, read this book.

The book's contributors manage to provide a personal insight and relate to their own experiences, while introducing you to a wide variety of subjects in an accessible and credible manner. Regardless of your background and current circumstances you will either find an inspiration to try out something new, or an answer to why one of your assignments was wrought with challenges, or, perhaps, an explanation of an approach you may have intuitively tried but didn't know there was a name to it.

If members of your team ask you about the differences between the roles of project manager and business analyst--something I come across very often--you will find Suzanne Robertson's insights useful and easy to refer to.

James Archer's chapter on facilitative leadership is both inspirational and practical, his work having made a significant difference to the world of social workers by looking at alternatives to what the government had asked off all the councils in England and Wales, and by focussing on the core and shared values of those for whom the information system was intended.

Chris Matts and Kent J McDonald provide their perspectives on business analysis, leadership and agile. I have not seen agile defined so simply as by them who view it as "collaboration among stakeholders to deliver value to customers in frequent increments with consistent reflection and adaptation".

I am convinced that the materials and references provided in the book will be instrumental in achieving my aspiration to build a community of practice in my work place.

This book is filled with golden nuggets for us business analysts to learn from in our quest to continuously improve ourselves and to make a difference to our projects and organisations. I find each chapter holds something to take away and reflect on. It is a book to be read bit by bit to really gain from all the knowledge and experience being shared by the varied and brilliant authors.

The reading was easy, not rocket science, and every article pointed me to alternate sources and readings to explore. While it talked about the leadership journey, it also arms you to continue the journey. My planned flight reading has given me a whole lot of references to check out and actions to take.

I highly recommend this book to any BA, anywhere on their BA journey. Indeed to anyone, as leadership applies to everyone. In fact, I'm off to pick up a couple more copies for some BAs I know.

I needed this book for an online class. Of all the classes I've taken, this book has more real world information than any other business textbook I have read. This is especially the case if you are a business analyst (BA) or do similar work.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to leadership for business analysts 19 Mar. 2014
By Laura Brandenburg - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
We all know that successful business analysts not only analyze, but lead, often from the ground up. The authors present leadership in an attainable way, showing today's business analysts how to develop the leadership skills and competencies that will make them successful in next generation business analyst roles.

I highly recommend this book for any practicing business analysts who are looking for ways to up their game.
