Product description

Review

Children have an unnerving knack of taking their parents and carers by surprise. Emma’s book places safety in the context of child development, empowering parents to anticipate risk and avoid serious accidents in childhood. She shows how prompt first aid can help minimise the impact of an accident, sharing her practical knowledge and skills. And she explains how to assess a situation, so we have the confidence to apply first aid skills in an emergency.

Katrina Phillips, Chief Executive, Child Accident Prevention Trust

Being a parent is scary and we have a natural tendency to over-protect our children. Rather than wrapping the children in cotton wool, arm yourself with Emma’s great book, take sensible precautions and then let your children enjoy their childhood. Being armed with the knowledge and skills to deal with accidents is much more practical than trying to foresee and prevent every mishap.

Dr Amanda Gummer - The Good Toy Guide, Good App Guide and Fundamentally Children

'Children are curious and it’s only natural that they will have minor accidents as they explore. ‘Burns, Falls and Emergency Calls’ is a super informative, but easy to read book, for families, parents, grandparents, childminders and carers, to help everyone become aware of potential risks. It teaches the skills needed to help in an emergency without overwhelming the reader, and of course, that could ultimately save lives. This great book empowers and gives confidence to everyone who reads it and I highly recommend that you go out and grab yourself a copy and keep it handy.’

Sue Atkins ITV ‘This Morning’ Parenting Expert & Author of ‘Parenting Made Easy – How To Raise Happy Children’

Burns, Falls and Emergency Calls is a pleasure to read and written using Emma’s decades of experience in nursing and first aid. Parents, carers and anyone working with children and young people will appreciate the way that Emma has focused on child development accidents and injuries, as well as outlining the norms of developmental expectations for different age groups. This unique and informative book is a must.

Laura Henry - Award winning international Early Years specialist.

I love this book! I now have 2 copies; one for the home and one for the car! Really clear safety and first aid book with information covering birth to young adults. I love the clear layout especially the way the key info is in bold,The book covers prevention of accidents and also safety tips for eavch age group. It also takes you step by step through any accident situation and tells you exactly when to seek medical help or call an ambulance which I find really helpful. The pictures and diagrams are really clear and all the info is concise. I did a child first aid course a few years ago but really benefited from reading through this book. As a result of teh book I have a) quizzed my husband and made sure he has a better grasp of first aid b) brought my own skills up to date and c) decided to have a top first aid kit in the home and car (details of what to include are in the book and there were a few surprises!) Cannot recommend enough!

This is a great book that not only deals with all the essentials but also gives some fantastic snippets of information like 'a babies lungs are the same size as tea bags' and 'a babies skin is fifteen times thinner than an adults'. As a first aid trainer these pieces of information can enhance your delivery and especially when delivering paediatric courses. This book is well written with a logical layout and has clearly been written by someone who knows their subject inside out. I would highly recommend this book.

As a mum of a toddler and a newborn this is exactly what I was looking for. The first section tells you the most common accidents and advice for each age group, which highlighted all sorts of things I hadn't thought of. The following sections cover pretty much any accident that could happen in the home and are really clearly laid out with pictures and bullet points of key info. Despite having done a wide range of different first aid courses over the years, it contained several things I didn't know and reminded me of other things I had forgotten. I am going to keep my copy somewhere obvious as I want to be able to grab it in an emergency and think this would make a great present for new parents or anyone with young children.

As a first aid instructor working abroad, this book will come in handy when presenting FA courses. It is well laid out and includes current recommendations. First Aid should be made accessible to everyone, this book makes that possible.
