I bought this second hand and then bought the Big Surf Island upgrade from the PSN store online for roughly £5 (which I think, if you buy this new comes included anyway but it was cheaper for me at the time to do it the way I did it). You get the bikes included either way which opens up even more challenges for your Bike License (which is different to upgrading your normal standard license for the cars). You also have a separate licence for when you are on BSI as well, which means you have plenty to do!
The main point of the game is to upgrade your license to unlock new cars to race them and complete more challenges, and this can be done in a few ways that I have found:
Race - pretty straight-forward but no race is the same; it will give you a a point A (you are here) and point B (the finish line) at the beginning of every race and you can use your map in the bottom right to navigate too and you have to come first to win.
Stunt Run - earn a certain score before the timer runs out. This will mean you have to do stunts to earn points like smashing through billboards and signs and driving off of ramps and slopes and doing wheel spins and the like.
Burning Lap - race through checkpoints in a rough circle (always different depending on which burning lap you enter) around the city to the finish line before the time runs out. These are also available separately for the bikes which is fun as anything! Up in the mountains on roads long enough to really get your speed up on a super bike - yes please!
Marked Man - survive for a certain amount of time whilst driving to a finish line whilst trying to dodge the cars that are deliberately trying to take you down.
Winning these upgrade your license and there are many different finish lines and starting points for each, making the game highly addictive! The game is also huge like a real city (especially with the added island) which makes it feel relatively real, especially with the day/night effects that add to the atmosphere and the awesome graphics.
There are loads of different cars to choose from and different challenges such as 'Marked Man', 'Stunt Run', 'Cops and Robbers', 'Showtime' and many others. They are all very exciting, and the handing of most of the vehicles is near flawless. The world of Paradise City is scenic and idyllic, it's the perfect setting for mayhem. But I have to be honest, there are negative aspects to the game.
The fact that there is no driver to your car is kinda creepy. It would be so much better to see someone thrown from the windshield every time you crash. The customization of every vehicle is limited. And the mini map really, really could use more detail. But the worst complaint of all is the trophy which require 8 online players to meet in Wildcat Stadium. It is required in order to get the Platinum. I have tried many, many times to get this trophy but finding 7 others to cooperate is impossible. Up until this point the game seemingly gives away trophies for free (there are 98 of them) but sticking this one in there was pure evil on behalf of the programmers.
However, the most appealing aspect of the game is the custom soundtrack option, in which you can play your own tunes from your PS3 over the gameplay without losing sound effects. Why don't more games support this? Why???
Still, it's an amazing game with breathtaking visuals.
Lasting Appeal A
