Review

Another creepy thriller from a modern master. (Daily Mirror)

He's compared with Stephen King because his tales have a touch of the supernatural - but crime writer John Connolly is a star in his own right. The Irishman has more than proved himself and the new Charlie Parker novel The Burning Soul is another cracking read. (Sun)

The author's powers remain undimmed. Vintage JC. (Express)

'In THE BURNING SOUL, John Connolly has delivered a cracking good tale that seamlessly blends suspense, mystery and just the lightest touch of his signature supernatural ambience. As always, Connolly writes beautifully. He brings the backwoods of Maine alive, and the main and secondary characters are all acutely observed' (Irish Independent )

'An intelligent, plausible thriller, both harrowing and memorable.' (Kirkus Reviews )

If you haven't read this series of books you have missed out. The characters in this books are very well written and can make you shake with laughter.
I recently gave one of the books to a friend to read who promptly bout all the others in the series. My mum buys the newest book for me every Christmas and I start reading it on Christmas Day.
The books follow the same characters which is something that I like in books. You don't have to start at the beginning of the series but it is nice to. Highly recommend and you won't be disappointed.

I read this book in paperback some time ago but had difficulty recalling the plot so decided to buy on my Kindle. Glad I did because although I began to remember parts of the novel, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Whilst,in my view, not the best of the John Connolly books, I would still give it a four and a half star rating and would certainly recommend it - particularly to those who are not already Charlie Parker fans.

This is well up to standard as a Charlie Parker story with a plot that keeps you guessing. I am always fascinated by Connolly's descriptive narrative and his flirtation with "ghosts"..He is a great author and his books reflect wide research giving a great backdrop to the action. Keep em coming!

Bought three books, really pleased with the quality. I love John Connolly and Charlie Parker. Beautifully written, only problem is it does show how limited some other authors are!

As a recent reader of John Connolly's books and an instant supporter of his writing I felt very disappointed by The Burning Soul.
Whilst I really like his writing style and the characters he has created this book pretty much just focussed on Charlie Parker.
Nothing wrong with that in some ways.
He has developed Charlie Parker's character extremely well and quirky though he may be I find myself endeared by him and his dry wit.
The book started off well enough and I felt I was in store for another great read.
However as the plot developed I found it becoming more and more tortuous as each new chapter unfolded.
So instead of reading this book at a quick pace I actually got bored, which is heracy to say but I did.
The book I read before this was The Killing Kind with the villainous Mr Pudd which I thought was compulsive reading.
The Burning Soul didn't have the same edge nor characters which moved me either way.
It also meandered on too much with IMO too many extraneous diversions which led to cul-de- sacs.
I also felt the ending was a little disjointed.
To get back in the swing again I am going start at the beginning of John Connolly's books and read next Every Dead Thing, which by all accounts is superb,
