No. 1 international bestseller and Swedish crime sensation Camilla Lackberg’s new psychological thriller featuring Detective Patrick Hedstrom and Erica Falck – irresistible for fans of Stieg Larsson and Jo Nesbo.
YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE PAST
Easter 1974. A family vanishes from their home on an idyllic island off the Swedish coast. They have left everything behind – including their one-year-old daughter, Ebba.
Now, years later, Ebba has returned to the island. She and her husband have suffered the loss of their only child and are looking to make a fresh start. But within days, their house is the target of an arson attack.
YOU CANNOT ESCAPE THE FUTURE
Detective Patrik Hedstrom takes on the investigation, aided by his wife, crime writer Erica Falck, who has always been fascinated by the mystery of Ebba’s abandonment and the family’s tragic history.
When dried blood is found under the floorboards of the old house, it seems that the cold case involving the missing family is about to be brought back to life. And soon, Patrik and Erica are consumed by the hunt for a killer who will stop at nothing to keep the past buried…

Those familiar with Camilla Lackberg's novels will be pleased to know that the relationship between Erica and both her detective husband, Patrik, and her younger sister, Anna, remain important. Meanwhile, in the police station, Gosta, who is usually rather work-shy, plays a starring role, giving this novel a different focus to the previous ones. (If from your previous knowledge of the series, you feel this is out of character, the author gives us good reason to find it credible behaviour in these circumstances.).
If you are a newcomer to the Erica Falck/ Patrik Hedstrom books, be aware that although this is a stand-alone story, some references to previous important incidents in the main characters' personal lives are not fully explained. This is a tricky point for an author to resolve: the repetition of facts revealed in earlier novels is annoying for a follower of a series and their omission can be confusing for new readers. Since the family lives of Erica, Patrik and Anna are an important element of this cosy Nordic crime series, reading the books in order will give the most satisfying experience.
Probably 3.5 stars, rather than a straight 3.
When I say 'a family' I mean a father, his three children and his young second wife who is not much older than his adult children. The father Rune is the authoritarian headmaster of the school, he ruled school and wife with a rod of iron. However. the family did not completely disappear, one family member remains.. The youngest family member, an infant girl called Ebba is found alone in the empty house with Easter lunch still on the table and no sign of her parents. The authorities assume mass murder but with no bodies or witnesses no-one is held to account.
Ebba is adopted and grows up with good adoptive parents in Gotenburg, she marries Tobias, and their son Vincent is born. The story opens with Ebba returned to the house from which her family disappeared all those years ago. She and Tobias plan to re-establish their lives after the death of Vincent.
The scene is set for the ghosts of the past to return to haunt and seek to destroy. We learn of Ebba's matriarchal family history and the connection real or imagined with a prominent Nazi. There are lots of skeletons in the cupboard metaphorically and practically speaking. Detective Patrik Hedstrom and his wife Erica each have a role in bringing together the threads of the complex plot.
It is a good story and for the most part well told but for me something went wrong in the final 20% of the book. The writing becomes really clunky. I don't know whether this is due to the writing or the translation. Either way, the editor must have dozed off. I found it really irritating and it spoiled what should have been the best part of the book. Without that lapse I would have rated this at least 4*
