Product description

Review

"THE BURIAL HOUR keeps readers guessing. Deaver is a master of plot twists, and they are abundant in this story that keeps the reader guessing about who can be trusted and what's behind the motivations of the abductor. Putting Rhyme and Sachs in unknown territory showcases a different side of their characters. Making them jump through hoops to keep international peace gives the story an extra edge."--Marilyn Stasio, Associated Press

"Jeffery Deaver's forte is the diabolical puzzle mystery, and THE BURIAL HOUR is so devilishly tricky you can practically smell the sulfur fumes... In a bold plot twist, Deaver folds Rhyme's inquiries into a broader investigation of a humanitarian challenge shared by the whole world. Takes guts, that does."--Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review

"THE BURIAL HOUR proves once again Jeffery Deaver is a brilliantly intricate novelist. THE BURIAL HOUR is lucky number thirteen in the Lincoln Rhyme/Amelia Sachs series. Taking Rhyme and Sachs out of their New York locale appears to rejuvenate Deaver and his story. Deaver has been writing novels for many years and he has never once disappointed me. Intriguingly detailed."--Jackie K Cooper, Huffington Post

Or the alternative title of 'Lincoln Rhyme Goes on Tour'. Jeffery Deaver has been my favourite detective thriller writer for more years than I care to count and, in all of that time and with all of that output (and I've read every word of it), there have only been a couple of duds. I marvel at how he manages, every single time, to misdirect me and every word of every work is an utter joy. 'The Burial Hour' is up there with the best.

When the hugely popular 'Morse' TV series decided to splash out and shoot an extended episode in Italy, it broke all records for popularity and also had the effect of boosting Italian tourism by many fold. This book does the same thing for Lincoln and Amelia. To get these two (or three, counting Thom) Americans immersed in an Italian criminal investigation is very slightly clunky but, once that degree of suspension of disbelief is engaged, the story is as superbly ingenious as the reader expects from My Deaver.

As always, the red herrings form a carpet knee deep and every word of this must be dissected to see if the reader is being misdirected before moving on; he's not going to fool me this time! But, of course, he does. This plot takes the reader far beyond any reasonable expectation. Is the base of the story that underpins the final reveal realistic? Well, I would hope not but, then again, it's not so far from plausible and, as always, Jeffery Deaver is very topical in his background; the fear of terrorism, xenophobia and the refugee crisis.

As is always, now, the case, I pre-ordered this book and had to wait several months for it to be issued. It was, absolutely, worth the wait

Without a doubt Deaver writes the most intriguing and clever novels, and his ability to chane styles is impressive. Who would not have believed Carte Blanche to be a genuine Ian Fleming book? However this is one of the most interesting and fascinating of his offerings for some time. Why is it that the books you want to last the longest are the ones you just can't put down? More Lincoln Rhyme stories please, definitely the most captivating hero.

More than a little unbelievable (I guess there must be a limit to the number of twists even Deaver can think up without stretching) but fun nonetheless. The Italian setting was enjoyable and, no spoilers, but the book sets up what might be an interesting change to the series.
