First three points.

One. This is a reissue of a 1988 recording not a new 2001 release.

Two. If you are looking for the version of the Nunc Dimittis that was the theme tune of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in 1979 you may be disappointed. It used a treble voice. A counter tenor is used here and the effect is quite different. This piece is also not a good guide to the sound of the whole disc,
as it is the one most conventionally set within the English Choral tradition, whilst the other have a quite different sound (see below)

Three. Choral Works may be a misleading title. All the works here are for one or two voices, never a full choir.

OK. That's settled.

This disc makes an excellent introduction to the full bodied soundworld of Geoffrey Burgon. His influences include English music of the 16th and 17th centuries and that of Benjamin Britten, but there is no English reserve here, the music sounds far more continental.

The richest sounds of all are in the opening Canciones del Alma, three spiritual love poems by John of the Cross given heady, exotic settings.

Throughout the disc there is an obvious love for the possibilities of the human voice as an instrument in itself, especially the male countertenor. James Bowman and Charles Brett give superb performances.

The disc is a pleasure from beginning to end, full of music that prefers to be intelligent rather than difficult and rich rather than complicated. And, Joy of Joys, which shows a genuine love for the forces employed.
