Product Description

Product Description

Something of a star in terms of recording and songwriting during the 1930s - Bumble Bee Slim really should have a much more prominent name within blues history. He recorded across a number of labels including Bluebird, Vocalion and Decca. His music isas accessible, entertaining and engaging to today's audiences as it was in the 30s.

One of the more obscure (today at least, not in his time) pre-war artists Bumble Bee Slim played a mixture of urban and country blues. And splendid stuff it is too.
This double Cd in the mostly excellent Classic Blues series features Bumble Bee Slim's sophisticated blues vocal accompanied either by guitar, piano or a small jazz style band with occasional duets with female singers.
Who were the other musicians? Did he play guitar or piano? These are questions (among others) the album notes entirely fail to answer. But so what! Just enjoy the music!
If you like pre-war blues with more than a hint of jazz then this album is for you.

Popular and prolific, Bumble Bee Slim parlayed a familiar but rudimentary style into one of the earliest flowerings of the Chicago style. Contemporary with Scrapper Blackwell an Leroy Carr. In the 30s one of the most-recorded bluesmen of the decade. The only fault in this Essential series is the lack of recording dates and poor liner notes, but music is good pre-war acoustic country- and early Chicago blues.
