I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is itching to turn their dreams into reality via the start-up route. I particularly recommend it for those starting a tech venture. That's Chris's personal background and it shines through clearly in the book, although I'm sure the lessons will be of great value to anyone starting anything - a bakery, a social movement, a you-tube channel, or a B2B software company. It even gave me some new thoughts on how test an idea that's been bouncing around in my head at nearly zero cost. Can't wait to try it!
Although intended for startups, I was reminded that a lot of his advice applies to later stage young companies as well, with a tutorial on networking and good perspective on seeking funding. The best parts for me where the glimpses of his own career (I hope he will consider more of the inside stories for a next book) and his laser focused un-varnished thoughts on what he looks for when considering new investments.
This book is a classic example of all that's good about America. It is a perfect reflection of the humility and generosity that Chris Heivly projects in person combined with actionable stories that at their core understand what's important in life from family and friends to work life balance, and now giving back to others who dream about making it big and building the best fort (or your equivalent) ever.
Chris has done a great job drawing parallels between the familiar childhood process of building a fort with your friends and the daunting prospect of building a company as an adult. This simple metaphor helps readers step back and think about the larger forces that impact any creative endeavor. Also, this book is not just for prospective entrepreneurs or those new to the Lean Startup method. I have been a full time entrepreneur for 5 years and frequently coach at Lean Startup workshops. I found Build The Fort to be a useful refresher and a delightful change of pace from similar books which tend to be dense and impersonal. The tone, and familiarity of Chris' writing style makes this a quick and enjoyable read.
I suggest you take outline notes on a separate piece of paper as you read this book... starting with his chapter 1 Socialize the Idea without Fear or Inhibition. You will have your early stage business plan right in front of you.
From the perspective of having "started up" 6 ideas and formed them into successful companies/forts.... Chris has nailed my life in one simple book. Thanks Chris Walt Brown
