After 2 years of usage (two failed disks)

I purchased this NAS drive 2 years ago. It came with Seagate Barracuda Hard Disks, the first of which failed after 1 year of usage. I replaced the disk and the NAS nicely rebuilt the RAID array without any problems. The second of the original disks failed just after Christmas so lasted roughly 2 years before failing and I replaced it with identical disks and the array rebuilt without any problems. What I find confusing is Buffalo recommend using their own brand OP-HD disks on their website for replacements, however I can't understand why they don't ship the product with them in the first place.

I have been told that the best disk to use for a NAS are the WD Red disks. I would have expected a longer disk life for a NAS drive and can't understand how the disks could have failed so soon. I have identical Seagate disks inside a server which have lasted longer than this, so will wait and see how long the replacement disks last.

Good value for money RAID NAS drive

This drive does exactly what I want. It allows me to mirror the 2 3GB drives providing a secure method of storage for my files.

I use this in combination with a UPS (battery backup) to protect all of my vital data.

The device is supposed to perform a number of extra functions including a print server, buy I found that when the other functions were enabled, drive access was slowed to a crawl. Disabling all other functions was the only way I found to resolve this issue.

If I could easily use all of the functionality I would have given 5 starts but as it is I think 4 stars is fair.

I would only recommend this drive if like me you only need the RAID function.

I have had to drop the star rating from 4 to 3 due to very poor data transfer rates.

I have seen that other people have had issues with reliability. I can't say I have had any issues of this type. My unit is very reliable. The only issue other than VERY poor data transfer speed is that the unit will lock up and become unreachable now and again. As this is basically a very small computer this is to be expected. (but not really acceptable).

You cannot watch movies from the drive via a network with out glitching.

Considering the nearly £300 price tag I don't think this drive provides good value for money.

Update Oct 2020
This raid is still working 7 years after I bought it. I have had to replace both drives now, but this is to be expected with a RAID drive. The important thing is that my data is still 100% intact.
The data transfer speeds mention above were to do with the way I had the drive connected using 200mb plugs. It is now always connect via 1000mb hard wired network cable and works very nicely. So I will have to put the stars back up to 4.

I bought this as my first NAS; I did my homework before buying- read all sorts of reviews and stayed away from cheaper NAS solutions. I went for this one because it sounded like a decent solution and also included 4TB storage for the price of just an enclosure.
Here's what I found after 3 weeks of using it:
the good:
- it's small, compact and very quiet
- easy to set up, and the documentation on it is fairly ok - you can find instructions for just about anything you want(remote access, bit torrent client, etc)
the bad:
- it's rather slow: I got upload speeds of 4-5 Mb/s and I have a gigabit card and jumbo frames enabled
- it crashes a lot: it happened to me 3 or 4 times within 2 hours, when copying stuff on to it. When it crashes, the power button becomes useless, if you ping it's ip it will respond but if you try to access it you will get time-outs; it's just dead and the only thing you can do is pull the plug
- I have noticed the number of crashes depends on the size of the jumbo frame you set; the larger the frame (the faster the transfer speed, in theory), the more likely it is you will get a crash
- for normal frames, transfer speeds barely reach 1Mb/s

It works fine in normal operating conditions where you only read stuff off it once in a while; but if I had a choice now I'd go for something else and gladly pay the extra cash for stability.

6TB NAS Drive

Would have been 5 stars except for the fact (It's on T'Web) it takes over 6 hrs PER Terrabyte to create a RAID 1 Array. The drive comes as RAID 0 as standard out of the box. Changing to RAID 1 (mirrored)and creating the 3TB Array, formatting and checking the drives took nearly 18 hrs. Read the manual and learn to decipher what the "Info/Error" flashing light means. It will save you scratching your head wondering what the drive is doing.I eventually left it overnight and into the next day until it had finished and reported "Normal". Then it is dead easy to use, add users and map drive letters to. iTunes server works well and anyone with a Squeezebox or Sonos wireless HiFi will have no trouble setting up and streaming around the house.

A safe place for photographs

I was extremely worried that my elderly desktop computer might die on me whilst looking after several thousand irreplaceable digital photographs. My laptop had already crashed beyond repair but, luckily, all my photos were in the desktop pc and the few hundred in the laptop were only duplicates. I sought the advice of a friend whose job is in computers and he recommended the Buffalo Linkstation NASbox. He helped me to set it up so that all my photographs are stored on both disks. Therefore, if one of the 1TB disks in the NASbox fails for any reason, I have a backup on the other one and the failed one (and there's apparently no reason why it should fail) can be replaced and yet another backup can be made. Although I'm not very technically minded, I'm finding the Linkstation very easy to use and it does give me peace of mind where my photographs are concerned.
