Product Description

Review

This enhanced new edition guides readers more clearly into the meditations and draws out their significance more fully. Kamalashila has also woven in an appreciation of a view of the nature of mind that in the Western tradition is known as the imagination, helping make an accessible link to our own philosophical and cultural traditions. --Lama Surya Das

His approach is clear, thorough, honest, and, above all, open-ended exploration of the practical problems for those new and quite experienced in meditation. --Lama Shenpen Hookham

Beautifully and lucidly written. A joy to read and a greater joy to absorb. Kamalashila's experience with meditation shines out and inspires. Anyone who has dipped their toes in the waters of meditation or plateaued will find this book indispensable - anyone who has travelled further will delight in and recognise the depths he has plumbed. If you haven't yet meditated or are put off by the title of 'Buddhism' this book will aid your appreciation of the journey others have chosen to take. A treasure.

This is a very inspiring read, very clearly expounding the dharma and the methods and practices of meditation. I actually owned the first edition, which I also love, but this carries with it the weight of a further twenty years of experience of meditation and teaching meditation. A great teacher, this book has ignited and inspired this already quite inspired and experienced meditator - so it is certainly not limited to beginners, although I am certain this would serve as a wonderful introduction to meditation.

There is much of benefit to the experienced. It explores practices of all yanas, and especially interesting is the section on insight meditation and tantric meditation. I am benefitting greatly from the sections about the six element practice, the meditations on the Buddha and on conditionality, and on the visualisation of the bodhisattvas. I also gained a lot from the teachings on the basic practices, on breath meditation and metta bhavana.

Very highly recommended, very clear, and free from excess gobbledegook! It is so refreshing not to learn that actually to do certain meditations that you should have met this or that teacher and had this or that initiation, but just solid and inspired instruction and direct and helpful guidance.
