Read it the last time when I was in my teens and completely forgotten how good it is. It gives an excellent slice of 19th century and turn of the century life and mind set of the era. Read it!

A masterpiece that I re-read in his home town, Luebeck. And that is a fabulous town. Mann and Guenther Grass both have wonderful museums there.
